Russ K, I use 16 amp AGM or SLA batteries to fire up my 912ULS. Also keep
the battery on a small solar charger/regulator. Last year the MKIII sat in
the hanger for more than a 4 month period. Fired right up when I got back
home from my land trip. I'd have to go over to the airstrip to find out
what make and model I am using now.

I used a powersonic 18 amp part # ps122180nb for years on my hks 700e. It now
Spins my 912uls fast enough that I think I could maintain alt on just the battery + it's
A sealed battery --- mount in any position--- Aircraft Spruce part # 11-03154. (at)$61.50.
A real bargin.

As I recall, someone mentioned a lightweight battery that worked as well as those 12-pound ones.
Anyone have that info?

I understand the "new age" batteries are lighter than AGM and SLA batteries,
but the price difference is not worth the weight savings to me.

My MKIII started flying with lead acid batteries from Wal-Mart. Made my
first flight to Alaska with one in 1994. Was glad to get the SLA and AGM
batteries that work better and do not have the acid hazard to contend with.
Sulfuric acid will eat through paint, dope, epoxy chromate primer, aluminum
and 4130 steel. My MKIII knows.

Kolbs don't have a problem carrying a little extra weight. If I was going
to be building a Part 103 ultralight to make the 254 lb weight limit, I'd go
with the lithium ion battery or a pull starter.

My opinion only.

You may want to check out one of the new lithium batteries, they are still more expensive than lead acid batteries but the price has come way down. Incredible performance for very light weight. I have a 3.5 lb lithium in my 1.5l Mazda 2 - 4.5lb. in a 2.0l Mazda 3 and 1.25lb. in both a Honda 230cc 4 stroke dirt bike and a 250cc street bike. They work great, take up very little space and have almost no loss during storage.

I got one of the Shorai Lithium Iron batteries this last winter and put it in the MKIII to spin over a 582. Pricey, 14 amp hour, works great, weighs 2 pounds. But if you ever let it completely discharge, it's toast. I have an electrical cut off switch on mine just to keep it from bleeding down by any random current drains, or me forgetting to turn off the radio. Will let you know in a couple years if this battery was a good idea or not.
