Hi all,

I recall some time ago there was discussion on the forum regarding tank sealants, ethanol etc. in fiberglass tanks.

Did anyone end up doing some samples and immersing them in mogas/ ethanol for some time?

Has anyone inspected their tanks and found degradation or hopefully no degradation, and which sealants was that with?

Seems there are few manufacturers who will just plainly say "Ethanol resistant", so it all seems a stab in the dark?

I may be able to get non ethanol blended fuels most of the time in the sunny country, but I'm guessing not all the time, and I am sure that there will be contamination even when buying non "E" fuel due to quality control.

Regards, Matt.

Matt,
I am Netherlands based and my Pulsar 1 has the FWfuselage tank. It took me a while to check every fuel suppliers client service, but thus I found, that Shell V-Power is the only fuel that is guarantied ethanol free. So far no damage or weakening of the liner in the tank. Mine has a grey coating, but I cannot tell you much about it, since I bought it like this.
Regards, Bart

Matt,

My Pulsar XP tanks have been coated with Jeffco 9700. That stuff is claimed to be chemical resistant so I will use it again. It is gray material. I have checked over the time from the forum which material to go for next time and Jeffco come up on those pulls.

It seems as well that folks who have added layer of end plate sealant top of Jeffco to the wing root corners and around fuel cap ring have less issues. I have decided that I'll join to that group 😊.

In the UK at least some Shell V-Power contains ethanol. My local Shell garage was ethanol free until the day after they refurbished all their pumps (perhaps the old pumps were not ethanol proof?)

My local BP garage sell BP Ultimate (not the regular stuff) that is ethanol free. Other pilots have reported the same from their BP garages.

I saw a report (by Jabiru Australia) that some ethanol free high octane fuels also rotted their fibreglass tanks, because of the additives used to improve octane. I read that (In the UK at least ) BP Ultimate obtains its high octane by refining rather than additives.

So far so good on my plane

For North America, visit http://www.pure-gas.org/ for an index of
8135 automotive gas stations that sell ethanol-free gasoline/ petrol.
The site has a feature whereby individuals can add new stations they
find, so perhaps they could be talked into adding tabs for other
countries.

In the USA, many street rod clubs keep lists of gas stations in their
area that sell ethanol-free gas, and/or racing gas. Near me, the
Minnesota Street Rod Association has a list of all the stations in
Minnesota and western Wisconsin.

Check with your local street rod club.
