I have been struggling with carburetors since the begining, two years ago and have finally got it working as it should. I have learned a lot in this during this time and wanted to share it with you.

docs.google.com/document/d/1lelphULSihzqSQjn8LQX-Nft78zqX-WZ-iH_rn8gGGs/edit?usp=sharing

The link goes to a Google Docs file with pictures and such and won't display here. Feel free to comment here.

The gist of the article is this, I didn't know what I didn't know and now I do.

I was floundering and really did not know that 1400+ EGT's were too high, 5.5 GPH is too low at full rich full throttle.

Great information Ron! I also had lean engine damage at less than 60 hours. After discussions with Russ at D&G, he opened my nozzle 10%. Now I am wondering if we should have gone a little more. I have talked to others that have discovered lean damage when they thought everything was okay. Roy has his dynamometer almost ready and plans to do some carb testing on this issue. I did not have a good set up on my EGTs (too far down on the pipes). That has been corrected and I plan to pay a little more attention to the readings.

Jeff

EGTs can be deceptive, because sometimes it is hard to tell if it is cool because you have to much air or to much fuel.

Here is something that you might not know: You can get a guage that will tell you exactly what your AFR is for less than $200

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/avm-30-2310/overview/
Use it to set your mixture, then sell it on eBay (or, hold onto it for periodic checks).  A simple multimeter makes a fine gauge, if your willing to use a look-up table to convert voltage readings to mixture values. Yes, the lead in 100LL WILL desensitize the sensor, but the symptoms of that are that the gauge response slows down. After using leaded fuel for a while, it will take tenths of seconds for the gauge to respond with the correct value, instead of milli- or even micro- seconds that the engine computer needs.  The time difference renders the sensor useless as feedback for electronically controlling an engine, but you can't read the gauge fast enough for it to make a difference in this use. Compare that $200 to the cost and hassle of a new set of valves.
PS: Weld the sensor bung near one end of a 12" piece of pipe that will seal over you exhaust outlet, with the bung nearest the exhaust.  Make some adapters for various size exhaust outlets. Now you have a portable system useful for measuring the actual mixture on any vehicle.

Today I was flying at 3000' and engine was leaned out to about 1350-1380 EGT at 2800 RPM. I pushed the throttle full and watched the EGT's go down to1200 without moving anything but the throttle. OAT was 67F and all the other temps were in the green, CHT 280-300, OT 220-230. I think things are looking pretty good now that the engine is getting enough fuel.

Thanks for the data points Ron. My CHTs run 280-325 (one side versus the other). OT is 220 and EGTs run 1350-1400 lean at 3000 rpm.
