Gidday,
We are coming across to France in late August early September for 2-3 weeks and would like some suggestions in particular of places out of the way, and maybe some hiking day trips as well. We’ll do the normal stuff, but I was wondering about trying to get out of the car and take in a bit whilst hiking. I’d like to have a closer look at the Pyrenees and at this time of the year it should be the right time to get about. We might head down as far as Barcelona or simply tick the French box, including the Med.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted, as I know a lot of our UK brothers spend time in France.
Regards

Hi Tony,
How about a week or so on the French canals? Relaxing and you see the real France. Endless walks and cycling on tow paths, as well as the fun of handling the boat and locks etc. its a really good holiday for all ages. Good food and wine and a lot of fun!
The canal du midi is near where you are going, but is usually busy as it is fabulous. Plenty of hire companies do one way hires. However for quieter canals in the heart of France look at the nivernais canal in burgundy.Plenty of hire companies including France afloat, le boat, nicholls and locaboat, all on line, hire on several of the canals. Plenty of visitors from aus and nz as well as loads of Brits on the canals, so you are amongst friends!
September is our favourite time to spend on the french canals. Usually much quieter and weather often very good.
For a different view of France and life I recommend the canals. As you can tell I am addicted- hence the slow progress on Europa build!
If you need any more info please let me know .
Best wishes,
Graham Hall

Hi Graham, Iwas reding your mail on the French canals, We have a 42 ft sailing boat a Beneteau 411 that draws 6 ft and would also like to take her down the french canal system dismasted. Do you know the depth of the canals down to the Med at the moment. Also have a Europa in bits, fully stalled rebuild, Classic tri gear 914. One day one day I will get it flying again.

Hi Tony,
If you are near the Med side of the Pyrenees in August it would be great to see you. We have a spare bed room in Empuriabrava which is at the end of the Pyrenees and a possible stop off point on the way to Barcelona which is about 1.5 hrs drive away. We are there until about the 20th August.
August is for boating not flying!

Tony, as someone who goes to France several times a year,
I can say that whilst the whole country is virtually
without exception worth visiting, my favourite area is the
Loire and its tributaries. It is the area where the
aristocracy built their country pads (i.e. Chateaux)
before they had their heads lopped off, and for me it has
everything, excellent food & wine interesting countryside
and great architecture.

Hello Tony,
If I tell you I am planning to go to Australia and ask you what places to visit, I believe you would be embarrassed ! So am I . There are so many "must see" places in France. Making suggestions would mean writing a book! Many guys have done that already.
However if we could arrange to meet somewhere during your trip, it would be a pleasure for me to take you for some flying in my Monowheel. I will send you more details off list.
Best regards

Hi Tony,
Same offer to you (except I have a tri-gear) if you come close to Auxerre, north of Bourgogne! BTW Sancerre is a 20 mn flying and there is an airfield (Cosnes sur Loire) just in front.

Hi Nigel,
I'm not surprised the Europa plays second place to a beneteau 411!
We have a canal boat (bluebelle) that draws .62 m and based in Vermenton on nivernais. Certainly the Bourgogne canal and nivernais would be difficult- I,ve seen a westerly bilge centau scraping the bottom of the Bourgogne. Lot of weed too, so overheating common with some boats.
I have no personal experience of the loing canal but hope to do that circuit in September. The book says 1.8m draft.
Am going to boat next week so cannot comment on water levels now.
If you haven't come across it, fluvial net.com with their fluviacap planner is good as is VNF website.
Best wishes,
Graham.
P.s. if you do come through the canals would recommend plenty of fenders for the locks and hire boats! The midi in particular is frantic.
