I replaced tires and brake shoes on my RV-12 during its annual. Purchased Aero Classic tires. One was out of balance and when on taxi it seemed as if I was going over rumble strips. Dresser replaced the tire at no cost.
I replaced the tire. Still have a shimmy on take off...it damps off quickly, but only the right side does this.
Talked to MATCO who made wheels/brakes...they suggested tightening the retaining nut on the axle more until the wheel no longer freely rotated when spun and plane lifted so wheel was off ground. This helped a bit but didn't cure the problem...its not so severe that its going to hurt anything, but until I changed tires/brake pads I never had this, so something is wrong.
Bearings well lubed and seem OK. Tire inflation is proper.
Only thing left I can think of is to simply throw money at the problem by replacing the Aero Classic tires with Goodyear Flight Custom III and new bearings. Throwing money at a problem is crude but often very effective.

I should have mentioned that I used a McFarlane pendulum balance unit and very very carefully balanced the tire/wheel/brake disk...all the spinning components...did this twice...no help...tire mounted correctly per red dot...real mystery.

Did you check the "roundness" of the tires? In other words, is the outside
of the tire concentric with the axle centerline. Since this was not a
problem before you did all the service work, it would seem to point to
either a mistake made during the service work or faulty parts. You didn't
mention the front wheel. Have you checked to see that everything is ok
there?

YEs, Warren, nose wheel is OK. sUspect tire after one was really out os round. Local tire shop could mount it and get an accurate determination of roundness. I put a stationary pointer on the edge of the tire and rotated it ..seemed round, even if my method was not so exact.
I expect that I will end up removing the Aero Classic tires and replacing them with Goodyear Flight Custom III s.

Sorry to hear of your frustration and extra expense. By the way, regardless
of what the wheel manufacturer said, I would never tighten wheel bearings to
the point where they are draggy. There's sort of a sweet spot just before
the bearings get draggy which is where you want to be.

I just gave up ! On take off this morning the 'bad' tire/wheel combo rumbled a lot on take off roll, and again quickly dampened after lift off.
I just ordered two Goodyear Flight Custom III and will post results after they are installed and tested.
Thanks for suggestions for you folks.

Problem solved ! I had replaced tires on the RV-12 with Aero Classic units from Desser. One was badly out of round, and Desser replaced it at no cost. The replacement was better, but still out of round, and no amount of balancing can cure that.
I installed two Goodyear Flight Custom III tires after careful balancing, then flew. On run up and lift off the tires/wheels were perfect...like silk.. no noise, rumble, shimmy.,...nothing, just perfect operation.
I will keep one of original Aero's which did not exhibit any problem as a replacement for the future on the nose wheel, and discard the replacement since it can't be fixed.
