I guess nothing is perfect in this world. I've been tinkering with this little annoying heat problem for 2-3 years now and every time I think it's fixed, it bites me. Today I went up in 90+ OAT's with the final modifications (I think). On climbout to 1000' (solo) the max temp was about 172 with cruise at 158. Put in the Rich Man for the second trip and temps went to 178 at 800' (climb rate was decreased with passenger). Reduced power just a tad and increased climb speed to 70 and the temps settled at 178.
Final coolant ratio was 75% water to 25% antifreeze plus a dash of the product WatterWetter. Last week I had 50/50 ratio. The new ratio seems to have cooled things off by around 5-7 degrees.
I can accept today reading at least for a while. Did notice that temps dropped below 150 on one long decent. Closed 1/2 the radiator and it stopped and started to increase.

Don,

I had a Toyota like that once....

I think you must be very close to the capacity of your
system to cool at those OATīs. Once near the limit,
it only takes a little push to make a big difference,
up or down. On the other hand, designing for the max
limit can be very draggy the rest of the time.

I still think all you need is a variable outlet from
your scoop. Something to draw more air thru on those
climbs on really hot days, but that you can close to
normal the rest of the time for less drag. I think
you have a good design and that is all it needs.

Looks good to me anyway, but then I am dealing with
the same thing on my scoop and havenīt had the time to
try it yet. Still a theory then, but my fixed outlet
door does help a lot when I bolt it on.

Kurt,
I should be testing today. We just broke the 1981 record at a nice 97
degree OAT. Getting ready to leave for NY so no time for testing. I once
said that changing the ratio and adding WaterWetter didn't make that much
difference. Well, I just saw in my log book where I had recorded a 6 degree
cooler with different ratios and WaterWetter. I did make a difference this
time and got me that extra 5 degrees or so that I wanted. Like you said,
everything is on the edge and just need a little shove.
The outlet might be a better solution but I'm going to stick with what I
have right now. I'm tired of fabricating fiberglass.

how big is the radiator? they made them larger for newer models the small one will be a hasel for ever

Trying to make a radiator that is to small work is always going to be a problem. If you want to deal with the heat issue for the rest of your life, just keep putting in WatterWetter and tweaking ratios and the like.

When you get tired of all the *#&$! get a bigger radiator and be done with it.

Slightly more drag: Costs a few knots.

Not having heat problems anymore: Priceless

Not always a loss of knots, I replaced my NSI brass rad for a thicker aluminum (same sectional size) unit and gained a 15deg C drop in temps..Series 5  EA81 Sub turbo.

My temps were running close to 200 on climb out in the spring so I
bought the larger radiator.

What I found out was that the old radiator must be partially clogged
even after having it cleaned by a shop.

The new radiator wouldn't let my temps get over 140. They dropped
drastically during decent so I landed w/o increasing power for fear of
cold seizure.

So now I'm running it in the middle of a hot summer with two big strips
of aluminum tape blocking off some of the radiator. My temps are just
over 180 on climb out and about 160 in cruise.

I want to try to mount the radiator up in the cowling with some kind of
flap for control. Now that I have excess cooling capacity that project
looks like it would work. Maybe something very similar to the KF II
radiator on SportFlight.

Mark,
Give me a holler, and I'll help you out on that. That mod was a success,
even though the 582 broke before I could play some more.

One issue I had yet to tackle: spend mucho effort keeping the heat in the
muffler, and out of the airflow. You can't cool a radiator using 250 degree
air. Other than that, it worked great.

The best part was having it all out of sight.

What type of radiator did you get ? I would love to get my temps down a little especially during the summer in NC. My temps are high with two people in climbout.
