Getting ready to disassemble a Corvair. I don't have any air tools/compressor. It would cost close to $300 for a impact wrench, compressor and hose. Is it worth it? Thanks!

You don't need any air tools to disassemble a Corvair engine, just a

regular 3/8" socket set. And a compressor you can buy for under $300
will not produce enough air for an impact wrench anyway.

Penetrating oil, some heat, elbow grease and a mastery of colorful language are all you need.

You don't need any air tools to disassemble a Corvair engine, just a regular 3/8" socket set. And a compressor you can buy for under $300 will not produce enough air for an impact wrench anyway.

If you use Kroil from Kano Labs as the penetrating oil, you can replace the heat with beer (while you wait for the Kroil to work its magic). The rest of the list stays the same.

Thanks. On the subject oil, The Machinist's Workshop published a report regarding various penetrating oils.
Torque to remove a rusted nut:
No oil….516 lbs
WD-40…238 lbs
PB Blaster…214 lbs
Liquid Wrench…127 lbs
Kano Oil…106 lbs
50/50 mix Automatic Transmission Fluid and Acetone…53 lbs

folklore. When I tried it on some rusty tractor implements it made me a believer.
Be sure to use it on the Corvair head nuts to avoid pulling the studs
out of the case.

I'll put that formula in my bag of tricks.
One recipe that I use is a mix of wintergreen oil and ATF. If I remember
correctly the mix is about 5-10 % wintergreen in the ATF. You have to
give it overnight, at least, and a couple of days is better, with
applications every 12 hrs or so. It's surprised me more than once when
I used it as a last ditch effort.
