Twice in two days two separate customers (Both have multiple partners owning the plane) have called to tell me one of their partners has landed on gravel runways. Both sustained significant damage to the horizontal. One will likely need to be reskinned.

If they want to do this, maybe they need that rubber leading edge covering on the stab. My Tiger has that and I’ve always understood it was for protection on gravel runways.

Maybe the pics didn't come out good. The entire bottom of both the elevator and the stabilizer have gouges that go completely through the skin.
If you want to fly into unimproved runways, get a plane designed for that.

Color me skeptical ..... I doubt that gravel could be flung up with enough force to actually penetrate the skin. Me thinks something else did the damage. Look at all the gravel that's been kicked up that only puts small dents in the leading edge .....

he dragged the tail trying to get off the ground. Cheetah near gross weight. High altitude airport.
Regardless. There are too few Grummans as it is. Be smart. Let's not do anything that MAY or may not cause any damage. It just isn't worth it.
Why would you want to take a plane designed for cross-country cruising into a strip that is best left for Cessna 180s?

Good point Linn.
And you have to consider Bush Planes. Most are tail draggers, their tail is even closer to the ground than ours, many are fabric so, why aren't they destroyed? It could also be that the Grumman owners used a lot of throttle during taxi and that kicked up the stones at a higher velocity. So, how do the tail draggers taxi? Well, they have their nose higher into the air and much more ground clearance. Which brings up the next question... What does the Grumman's prop look like?
