Anyone have a green tagged tacho-generator unit for an M14P that they would be willing to part with?

No, do not have one, but will say that a lot of folks think the tach generator is bad when it is actually a fractured solder connection in the plug that attaches to it.
You can actually remove the tach gen and connect it to a drill and operate it manually, and check the voltage a lot easier with the engine running.
If you have already done this kind of stuff, sorry for bringing it up.

Thanks Mark, Yes, have already rebuilt the connections inside the canon plug that fits onto the tacho-gen: still getting the rpm falling off line when the engine heats up, so the T-G is the next port of call, although your suggestion of running it from a drill might be worth trying when we get it off.

Don't have a source for you, but you'll also need to factor whether this is for a -50 or a -52.
As the tacho generators are different, DTE-1 & DTE-2 respectively.
The suffix denotes the number of cockpit displays that can be driven.
Speculate that a -2 might work OK in a -50, but doubt a -1 would drive both cockpits in a -52.
Hope this helps, Rob R

It's for my 50, so presume either would work?

Hmmm ... having reflected on this for a while longer it occurs to me that the Russians predilection for one-size-fits-all would not have resulted in two variants of tacho generator.
So fitting a DTE-2 in a -50 might work, but for how long before it overdrives the tacho display motor?
So you might fix one problem just to create another.
Better to source a DTE-1 if possible.

I have used both in my 50. Currently it has the DTE-2 installed. So I can at least verify it works, and it has not burnt out the display indicator yet.
Possibly just less voltage sag with increased current draw? Don't know.
Anyway yeah, I see you're point, and it probably would be better to stick with what the Russians intended.

If you have a large (3") hole in the panel you could use the horizon digital
tach. Works great on the M14P and will immediately tell you if you are
running on only 1 mag. (it constantly checks the difference between the two
mags. http://www.horizoninstruments.com/

Bear, I have installed and used this Tach on a number of different M-14 equipped aircraft and it works well, but one caution needs to be mentioned.
The P-1000 Tach connects to the P Leads of both mags which are a HUGE source of broad band energy. This energy can, and will, interfere with VHF radios in a big way if extreme care is not taken to shield the wiring properly.
And even then.... keep in mind that not all radios are created equally when it comes to how much they are impacted by such noise. The small lightweight Becker radios come to mind as a series that is extremely susceptible to this kind of interference, and in every case where a Becker was involved, the owner needed to either abandon the P-1000 Tach, or change to another model of radio.
After having spent hours trying to get rid of this noise on some airplanes that are susceptible as mentioned, I personally decided that although this is a really cool Tach, I'll stick with the Russian design.
On the same token, I must also mention that I saw one Russian radio that had the front RF stage blown out by a guy who butchered the shielding to the Russian Tach Drive! So ....
Not bad mouthing the P-1000 in any way, and it also must be kept in mind that some of the Becker radios were originally designed for Gliders and were kept very small and light, which means less robust internal shielding, etc.
Just need to be careful not to combine gasoline with a match, so to speak... when dealing with this model Tach.
