I am refurbing my open trailer. For the tailplanes, I originally made a plywood box on the trailer for them both to fit in. I wondered if anyone had a better solution for transporting them?

Yes, put them on the backseat of your car.

Hi Richard
My trailer has 2 vertically mounted dummy torque tubes over which each tail plane slide, at the base are stepped block to take the weight and stop them twisting. they are very simple and work well.I also have 2 pieces of plastic tube which I slide over the dummy tubes to keep them clean when the aircraft is assembled and over the exposed torque tube when the tail planes are off.
Hope that helps
Richard

Hi Richard,

I had exactly the same arrangement on my factory trailer. After a long trip over rough roads both TP5 sleeves had disbonded.

Richard,
I prefer a box with soft foam padding on the bottom and 1/2 inch foam on the sides.  It is important not to put any load on the TP16 trim tab pins.  For our enclosed trailers we have done this.

Posts can be problematic if not built precise.  Small trailers on rough roads means if there is any play it will impose shock loads.  This may cause eventual bearing failure.

Personally, I put them in the back seat or padded and strapped in my truck bed.  I sleep better that way.

Regards
Bud Yerly
