Dave Lewis and myself are having a rough time coming up with a radio intercom set up that works in our Kolbs. His Slingshot is 582 powered and my Mk3 is 670 powered. We both have Icom A4s and I also have an older A21. He uses single place patch cords with PTT, and I have a Rugged Radio intercom. I am very happy with the intercom, but our radio transmissions suck.
What do you guys use that you are happy with?
Also was wondering if anyone has tried the MGL Stratomaster mini radios with a two stroke bird? It seems they work great in the Sonex factory birds.

I am using the Sigtronics Transcom II Its an intercom for two stroke engines. It has a side band on it so that you voice comes through in your headphones as well. That keeps you from shouting because it is weird to not hear your own voice. I also has a jack for a recorder and a music jack which works ?pretty good? Although I could not hear music when I was running a 503. It does well with an HKS however. I find that music and coffee are a plus when you are flying. | LarryÂ

I guess I should have read a bit more before I let my fingers do any walking. The best guess is that your antenna is not right or your ground plane is either non existent, or there is electrical interference. Back in my cage,

Last winter we did a number of tests between two Kolbs, the FSII N582EF and the MKIII N420P and discovered some interesting things. One of the things we did was to use a handheld radio and while the engine was running, and using the handheld radio, move around the airplanes and try and discover where the engine created the most noise and the worse reception, and the least noise and the best reception.
We discovered that the best place for minimum noise and best reception was at the top of the vertical fin.
Based on that, we relocated the antennas for each airplane to the top of the vertical fin.
Here are the pictures of the installations for both the MKIII and the FSII.
The antenna is made by taking a Radio Shack twist-on male BNC connector, part # 278-103 and a length of 1/16" model airplane pushrod steel wire, and combining them like this: take one end of the steel wire, and taper it on a grinder until it will fit into the connector until the end just pokes through the end of the middle terminal connector. Solder it to the connector at that end. Fill the shank up with epoxy, and after it hardens, cut it to about 25 inches total length, and trim it to final length while checking an SWR meter. If you don't have an SWR meter, make it 24 1/4" long total length, base to tip, it will work. Put a little curl on the end, or Murphy's Law says someone will poke it through their eye. Cost? $8. Weight? 2 ounces.
Another factor was the headset. I had been using a Softcom headset for a number of years, but unbeknownst to me, it had gone bad. Got a new Gulf Coast Avionics El Cheapo ANR headset and it helped immensely. Also got an older Lightspeed ANR headset, and it also improved things immensely. Both are very good and quite comfortable, and the price in both cases was very reasonable on ebay. I can call TRI ATC for a comm check and get "5X5, with some background noise." Since both airplanes have a Rotax 582 churning away in the background, that sounds reasonable, and a pretty good deal. Before getting the new headsets, TRI ATC said I was unreadable.

We both use the older, (affordable) LightSpeed QFR headsets, they are sweet and I believe many here use them with good results. We gave factory 45 degree antennas under our nose cones with aluminum sheet metal disks on the inside of the cones for reinforcement. I believe the disks are grounded to the airframe. My tach and kill switch leads are separately shielded.
No capacitors on the buss.
We get garbled reception, a lot of background noise. Part of my issue may be in my patch cords to the intercom.

Use a 25v 22000 mf capacitor, more or less.
Install at or near the reg/rec on the positive wire with neg contact grounded to airframe.
The capacitor soaks up noise.

Here's a link to an MGL document that looks like it would apply to most installs that addresses radio/antenna/intercom issues. Since I don't trailer my Airplane and keep it hangared, I opted for a different install that works well for me. It is homemade as well and is dirt cheap to make. Made in a similar fashion as previously described and uses a 23.5 inch steel wire. The BNC inside the boom tube is a right angle variety and is kept as close to the top of the tube as possible to keep the antenna wire out of my control cables. I have been told I'm noise free on my transmissions and I occasionally receive transmissions from 150 miles away. I don't hear any engine noise in the radio. I use a vertex handheld on a ram mount. I use a radioshack 2,200uf 35volt capacitor mounted right across my regulator terminals. Bigger is better if you want to install it differently. 25 volt or greater is the important part.

Mf capacitor the other says a 2200.
? Is there a typo? My radio shack
Only has up to 10000 mf. I bought a
2200 dc ,has no positive or neg
Terminal marking. Only 3 bucks.
I'll try it If i don't hear from you guys.

On the 12VDC side of the reg/rec.
I discovered capacitors way back in my FS days. I wanted 12VDC power for the 447 without a battery. JC Whitney had a dirt bike battery eliminator kit that included a small capacitor. After flying with it for a while I decided that capacitor was extra cargo and removed it. Handheld radio was unusable. Replaced the capacitor and all was fine again.

My Rotax 447 install manual calls for a capacitor across the regulator a minimum of 2000 uf. A greater value is certainly better but the greater the value the larger the physical size. The much larger capacitors were too big to mount directly to my regulator which is where I wanted to install it so I opted for the RadioShack part# 272-1048 2200uf. It's working fine for me and mounts directly across the regulator terminals. You don't have to make a separate ground that way either. The negative side of the regulator should already be hooked to ground. I have no noise issues with my radio. Radioshack also has a 4700uf part# 272-1022 which would be even better. Both capacitors should be available at the store. If you want to mount the capacitor somewhere else then certainly opt for the larger capacitors like 20,000uf.
