Hello Kolbers,
There is a big push by the local fight safety organizations here in Alaska to get pilots to install Angle of Attack (AOA) indicators. Every year we lose at least several pilots to low altitude stalls while circling big game animals, in addition to other stalls causes. The military pilots, tell me that AOA was the way they were taught to fly since the configuration of their planes were often changing in flight. I am not planning on installing rocket pods on my wings, but to me the AOA sounds like a good idea for at least a low time pilot, if not everyone. Are there any AOA equipped Kolb’s out there?

Nick,
My AOA indicated comes by way of my Dynon D10a EFIS. It features an audio alarm that is piped into my intercom system. Additionally, I built a visual alarm of a line of 19 LEDs that strobe to the center on my panel, much like those flashing lights on the highway that wants you to change lanes.

No, I haven't flown it yet, although it is virtually finished. Lots of excuses, and some legitimate reasons. I quit work 9 years ago (I was a concrete contractor) but didn't have any money coming in, relying on my wife's income to pay bills, which we do by just barely squeezing by each month since she is a 3rd grade teacher.
I haven't had the $1000 it would take to get my tail wheel endorsement, and updated BFR.
Ahhh, then the main reason. Two years ago I mentioned I had a tremendous attack of glaucoma. In the course of one month, I lost about 50% of the vision in my left eye. Gone forever, ain'ta never coming back.
As if that wasn't enough, last year in January I had a major medical catastrophe. Lucky to be alive. $50,000 in medical bills, including new double cataract surgeries to replace both lenses due to cloudy vision.
This year I am still trying to recuperate from last year's fiasco. I am almost there....or at least as good as I'm going to be.
I sold the GlaStar kit I was working on, and now have the money, but presently my focus is on restoring a '66 Mustang fastback.
I plan on keeping my Kolb, and anticipate being able to fly it in a year or so.

If anyone is interested, I'll dig through my files and see if I can post them again.

Russ, all, Somewhere in the archives should be an article I posted about
three years ago that a member of my EAA chapter wrote about the lift
reserve indicator he built for his RV. It was complete with the part no. of
the gauge he used and instructions on how to tune the two pitot tubes that
drive it.

I'm interested in this AOA system but can't figure how to hook it up. The water column gauges I've seen on line have only one input so I'm baffled as to how they can measure a pressure differential.

Apologies for not get right back to you. I haven't forgot you, just a little busy.
Regarding that Lift Reserve Indicator that Rick shared, I did share it too, and I also built one that I can
detail the steps how I did it. I have a OEM one, and made my own duplicate version.
FYI for those thinking about making one for themselves; the factory uses the Dwyer 0-2 inches of mercury
gage, but Dwyer makes an exact same version that lists the column in CCs. I bought four and they are
the same model except it is marked metric rather archaic inches. But, in any event, it doesn't
make any difference in the world what the markings are, all we care about in our uses is the scale from
zero to full. Inches or CCs make no difference. I'll find the model numbers of the ones I bought.
In the meantime, Russ, while you are waiting for me to get with the program, peruse Bob Nuchols'
(of Aeroelectric fame's) list of various AOA and LRI articles.

I sold the GlaStar kit I was working on, and now have the money, but presently my focus is on restoring a '66 Mustang fastback.
I plan on keeping my Kolb, and anticipate being able to fly it in a year or so.

Hello Kolbers,
There is a big push by the local fight safety organizations here in Alaska to get pilots to install Angle of Attack (AOA) indicators. Every year we lose at least several pilots to low altitude stalls while circling big game animals, in addition to other stalls causes. The military pilots, tell me that AOA was the way they were taught to fly since the configuration of their planes were often changing in flight. I am not planning on installing rocket pods on my wings, but to me the AOA sounds like a good idea for at least a low time pilot, if not everyone. Are there any AOA equipped Kolb’s out there?

Joe, The carb synchronizer that's used for Rotax two strokes has two hook ups. You can make one from 20 feet of 3/16" vinyl tubing and a 6' piece of 1 X 6 for less than $10. If you use water with red food coloring it reacts faster than using ATF.

AOA systems compare either pitot pressure or pressure in a port just aft and above the leading edge of the wing, to either a 2nd pitot input angled downward, or pressure in a port just aft and below the leading edge of the wing.
If you see a water column gauge with only one 'port', there's another somewhere on the device; you just can't put a hose on it. A differential pressure gauge will have 2 ports that you can access. Here's one

that some with cooling issues are using to compare plenum pressure to cowl pressure after the heat exchanger (or engine, for air cooled engines).
Download the links from the Aeroelectric site & you can see a couple of examples of pitot style dual ports. If you google the term, there is at least one commercial product for homebuilts that uses tiny holes drilled in the nose skin of a wing, just above and below the leading edge. These holes are plumbed to a differential pressure gauge with an analog display, and a tone generator that can be wired into the intercom.

Tone generator? Now we're talking (ha!). I can easily see how to make a sensor by adding a second pitot tube at 45deg or so from the standard one, but I would want an audible warning, even more than a gauge. Allows to keep your eyes outside, especially when flying low and slow while watching things on the ground. So, how would one convert a pressure differential into an analog electric signal that can drive a varying tone for your headset or loudspeaker (plus maybe some electronic indicator)? Should also be easier to calibrate than changing sensor angle. Can someone figure out how to feed a signal into a tablet and use its amp? Is there an app for that?
(I am hoping to take advantage of the recent advances in consumer electronics by using a tablet and something like the iLevil to come up with an inexpensive "glass" panel.)

 No, I haven't flown it yet, although it is virtually finished.  Lots of excuses, and some legitimate reasons.  I quit work 9 years ago (I was a concrete contractor) but didn't have any money coming in, relying on my wife's income to pay bills, which we do by just barely squeezing by each month since she is a 3rd grade teacher.
 I haven't had the $1000 it would take to get my tail wheel endorsement, and updated BFR.
 Ahhh, then the main reason.  Two years ago I mentioned I had a tremendous attack of glaucoma.  In the course of one month, I lost about 50% of the vision in my left eye.  Gone forever, ain'ta never coming back. Â
 As if that wasn't enough, last year in January I had a major medical catastrophe.  Lucky to be alive.  $50,000 in medical bills, including new double cataract surgeries to replace both lenses due to cloudy vision.
 This year I am still trying to recuperate from last year's fiasco.  I am almost there....or at least as good as I'm going to be.
 I sold the GlaStar kit I was working on, and now have the money, but presently my focus is on restoring a '66 Mustang fastback.
 I plan on keeping my Kolb, and anticipate being able to fly it in a year or so.

 About two plus years ago I shared with this list a home-made AOA indicator (I think) using a Hall Effect circuit, magnet and torpedo pointer looking thing.
 I know I shared with list the home-made "lift reserve" indicator.  I have one "store bought" model (made by LRI, Inc), and I also have one I made exactly like it myself.
 If anyone is interested, I'll dig through my files and see if I can post them again.

Cessna has a small sail switch built into their leading edge. its position is calibrated so that it rings a buzzer about 5 mph before a stall. it seemed to me that it was easy, relatively inexpensive, and effective. my mkiii is noisy,,, so instead of a buzzer it could go to a bright flashing light. simple, mechanical, easy to test..... why would something like that not work?

There is a big push by the local fight safety organizations here in Alaska to get pilots to install Angle of Attack (AOA) indicators. Every year we lose at least several pilots to low altitude stalls while circling big game animals, in addition to other stalls causes. The military pilots, tell me that AOA was the way they were taught to fly since the configuration of their planes were often changing in flight. I am not planning on installing rocket pods on my wings, but to me the AOA sounds like a good idea for at least a low time pilot, if not everyone. Are there any AOA equipped Kolb’s out there?

Kolb Friends -
I'm not trying to be a List Monitor or anything here, but ... we gotta try harder to follow Matt's request to cut down on the extraneous text when we post messages.
On this recent topic (angle of attack monitors), I was scrolling thru several posts, each with PAGES AND PAGES of unnecessary back-chatter when the actual message consisted of only a few lines of text.
Please try to keep your posts confined to YOUR words, and keep only enough of the previous topic message to give reference to your post.
Also, try to remember to type "Do Not Archive" for stuff that does not need to be kept forever in the archives.
