Greg,I converted both of my Sigtronics headsets to ANR via the kit and found that while they are not "Bose" the clarity and sound quality is actually VERY good, I'd do it again.  ANR is wonderful, especially for us geezers.

Off the normal Aircraft Maintenance questions but still a pilot question. I have a flight helmet that I would like to convert to ANR (active noise reduction). Looking over the internet and there are several people selling kits and prices from $200-350. Has anyone done the upgrade? Are you pleased with the quality? Who,s kit and who did the upgrade? I currently use a Clarity Aloft Headset weighing 2 oz and it is outstanding! Thinking of wearing a helmet on certain occasions. (Yes, I know, which occasions and why not all the time??) Don't want to open that can of worms so would only like info on the ANR  question. Thanks

Hi there,
First thing first, the helmet is there to protect your nugget in the event that you need to leave the airplane in a hurry, so you need a quick disconnect that will break free even if you forget to unplug your headset, so that is the first thing you need.

I was exploring having an ANR in my HGU-55 helmet, and I was lucky to get an ANR headset from ebay for 80$ I never got around installing it, because at the end you can't compete with a CEP kit. It seats in your ear canal and the foam seals out most of the engine roar.
Eventually I will have CEP/ANR headset and will let you know how that works.

Check these out instead. I've used them for years. You can also get custom ear tips made if required. You just need to be handy with a soldering iron.

I stated wearing a helmet to help canvel the noise and make up for the poor radios I once had installed. during that time, I have worked with a company called Westone in Colorado. They produce hearing protection and communications for the military and Police as well as commercial use. I was able to help them develop a set of ear plugs with integrated speakers that utilize the helmets communication that work well with civil radios.. Many people know other forms of this hearing protection as CEPs. The main difference between CEPs and Westones is that Westones use a molded ear plug (molded to your ear) and the CEPs use the standard soft foam ear plugs. Since the Westones are molded, they are A LOT more comfortable then the CEPs. I use to have to turn the volume of my radios to 100% while in the pattern, now I can turn to 10% and hear everything crystal clear. Now I can play music and still maintain communications. In my opinion, if your going to wear a
helmet and want some great ANR results.. Westones are the way to go.

Gents,

I totally agree with Larry.

Have used the Westone molded ear plugs / integrated speakers with a military helmet for several years and they are amazing. Later, had our local hemet guy add an ANR system. Compared to everything else I’ve used, it’s a genuine pleasure to listen on the radio with the very comfortable Westones, even with the M-14P running at high RPM.

I put the molded ear plugs on the CEP system and they work great. I have
both ANR and CEP and when I had the side exhaust (since removed) on the CJ I
could still turn the radios down and hear just fine. I recommend both
highly!!!!

I have ANR and CEP in my helmet and find that reducing the low freq via the ANR is more productive than the CEP. I went CEP first, then added ANR, now I fly mostly with just the ANR and don't fool with using the CEP.

Ted

That is interesting. I guess as with many things, its subjective and up to
the individual. I've had ANR for 10+ years in my helmet. I got it as soon
as flightsuits (Gibson & barnes) put it out. I liked it. I put CEP in
after I saw someone else with it and discussed it with them. I didn't like
the foam plugs, so I got the CEP ends put into molded plastic ends that are
custom fit. I flew with CEP for about a year. Stopped using CEP for a
while.

Now I'm back to using both. I find when flying multiple hours in a day,
that the CEP and ANR help a great deal.

Your mileage may vary.

If you are on budget and have an old (or new) set of headsets lying around, you cannot beat the ANR upgrade kits
Works with any David Clark or DC clone
A DC H10-13.4 with the ANR kit outperforms the David Clark X11 Wink
Read the comparison report here http://www.headsetsinc.com/fly01.pg58-63%20copy.pdf

I installed this kit recently in my DC H10-13.4 and made a big difference. In a H10-40 it will make an even bigger difference as the cup wall is thicker than the 13.4's.

Currently have the David Clark helmet K10 with the headset as a seperate underneath the helmet.

However, I am looking into getting a helmet and build this kit into it. Not sure if it will work well, but will try.
