Gentlemen,
What is required to fit a 100HP Rotax ULS into a Classic Europa?
Thanks for any info/tips/tricks from anyone who has gone down this path.

John,
I removed the 912UL from my Classic Monowheel at 900 hours and now have 1200 hours on the 912ULS that I fitted in its place with no problems to report. The only alteration I made was to fit the UL starter instead of the ULS as there is not enough room for the longer ULS starter and I fitted the Conair Soft Start to help with that situation. In fact the latest ULS comes with built in Soft Start. Other than that it is just a straightforward swap.

Hi,
I second what Dave says about the starter. The heavy duty one that now comes on the 912S hits the classic fwf mount.
An alternative to the soft start system that has worked fine for me for 4 years is to wire the ACS start switch that I installed to where when you turn it to the "Start" position one mag is grounded allowing the engine to only start on one mag. The instant you release the switch both mags are on line. I've never had any kick back with the small starter and a 4 year old battery. Thinking I may change the battery this year even though it still spins up the engine fine. It's the Odyssey 680 I believe.

The small starter works fine with the new flywheel and a lithium battery on the 912 ULS with the classic engine pint. Flywheel is only $350. 150 hours and no problems or kickbacks.

Hi Christoph,
So what is the difference between the new and old flywheel?

Rotax has a description of this. What I understand is that the new
flywheel has the timing lobes changed so when STARTER ENGAGES ignition
takes place a few degrees AFTER TDC, not before, as with the old flywheel.
I have both a new set of Rotax soft start CDI modules and the original CDI
units. Never tried either with the old flywheel as I was advised by Rotax
that mounting a new flywheel would be far be the most effective and cost
effective solution. So, with the old CDI I noticed it starts a slight bit
rougher but not much. With the new soft start CDI its quite smooth. I
think the biggest difference, though, was to go for the lithium battery.
Not only saving 12 lbs up front on the foot well but much more consistent
and higher voltage during cranking stage. The smaller starter cranks like
crazy. Worked for me, even in the Canadian winter last year.
I think the flywheel makes sense and exchange is about 1 hour when the
engine is out.
