I seem to recall a discussion some years back about the optimum position for mounting the monowheel brake caliper, because folk found in service that there was a problem with the standard position.

I’ve searched the Matronics archives for the Europa list but have not found a relevant message thread.

The manual illustration shows the brake caliper mounted in-line with the landing gear arm, but (without drilling any new holes) there are 2 other possibilities.

Can anyone tell me which one is the optimum in practice?

And is there any LAA Engineering issue with changing the brake mounting?

Hi Roland

Just rotate it round by one hole so the caliper is pointing backwards
more or less horizontal. Mine needed a small bulge made in the side of
the wheel well to accommodate it. The idea is that if you get a flat
tyre it does not get ripped to pieces by rubbing on the caliper.

Fred,
I changed the position of my caliper a few years ago. The attached picture shows how it is now. This position was choosen so that, when in the landing gear is in the retracted position, the caliper does not interfere with the starboard rudder cable as it did before and it does not protude in the slipsream.
Regards
Remi

Hi Roland, the (revised) brake caliper position was covered in the factory tech talk issue 22 on page 13. Attached is a copy of the page. I bought a new mounting bracket from the factory some years ago to replace the original design on my classic. Five minute job (almost) to replace it and it saves carving holes in the wheel well sides! Cheers!

Jon - thanks for the info. I hadn’t realised this discussion was soooo long ago! I do have a SX kit and so my brake caliper is already in the recommended position. I can relax now (about this issue, anyway).
