Jack
Great info. I have tried Floetrol but I was not able to get the results that others have.
I have a couple questions on the DTM. When you used the clear DTM over painted surfaces did you need to do any surface prep? How did you apply it? How did it hold up to weather?
Thanks

| Kolbers, before I retired I worked as a commercial painter and vinyl hanger for a commercial contractor. There were times we needed a very smooth finish on walls or trim with latex paint and we added a product that is called Floetrol made by the Flood Company in Ohio, it would allow the paint to flow out smooth as it dried. Also as to getting a clear coat check with Sherwin Williams and check on a product called DTM Acrylic and ask for their UTRA DEEP BASE. It is a CLEAR BASE that is used to mix very deep colors. You can buy it in semi-gloss and also gloss. Just get it without any color added. Will not yellow over time as oil base varnishes do. I've never checked but you could also check to see if their house paints have a clear base for deep colors.

It appears that Ultra 7000 is a solvent based paint, is quite expensive, and I doubt you would want to apply it with a roller. I'm sure that it would give you a superior gloss, but the reasons for using latex are cost ($50/gallon) and non-toxocity (can paint in your basement).

My Mini Max was finished with Sherwin Williams Ultra 7000 ..base /clear and it was as good as any paint job I have ever seen...better than most .. Very glossy and deep looking... Sadly the plane is sitting in an open hanger in the Carolina's now with an inch of dirt on it..!!Â
I notice that gallons of various base colors are available on Ebay for 250 a gallon...So, If one is not too particular about the color...it might be that the products could be bought for 500 to 700 dollars to finish a Kolb?
Looking at Sherwin William's site...I did no see anything about plasticizers...but I was told by the builder of my Max that he used them... Herb

I just finished a new video on applying latex paint with a roller. After the sanding and polishing process the results are nearly as good as spraying. Both methods, spraying and rolling have their advantages.
Â
Spraying gives the best finish, it’s faster for big areas, and requires less sanding to smooth the orange peel. But, you need spray equipment and a paint booth the contain the over spray, and you need to mask parts that you don’t want painted.
Â
Rolling is faster for smaller areas and requires no masking other than along edges, it needs no paint booth or equipment, there’s no over spray. But, it requires more sanding to remove the orange peel and while the result is quite good it’s probably not quite as good as spraying.
Â
Have a look at the video and let me know what you think.

When I painted mine in 04 I had looked at several latex paints and how they held up after long periods of time exposed to the weather. I ended up using Flex Bon which is made in Florida and designed to hold up under sun and heat year around. I used Depont automotive clear coat and applied two coats and have been very happy how well it has held up all these years. I lost the roof off my hanger 4 years ago and even exposed that long it still looks good.

I have thought about Valspar Spar Varnish. According to the label, it should work. Has anyone actually tried this?

|     Malcolm , My experience with DTM has been mostly on new work, we always lightly sand between coats with about 120 grit sandpaper on walls with a drywall pole sander and on trim with sponge pads and only sand very lightly just to remove any thing from roller cover fuzz to something in the paint. Can be re coated in 2 to 6 hrs depending on temp and humidity. We always strain the paint if any paint has been put back in the can. We even had to strain new cans of latex if when opened if they had a skin on the lid . DTM stands for Direct to Metal. On round metal duct work after cleaning we just put 2 coats of DTM no primer necessary no sanding between coats,  ( no one could run their hands on it .)   On new and old painted surfaces it needs to be  clean  and if going over a high gloss a bonding primer should be used first or sanding to dull the surface.  DTM will bond to almost any clean surface.                                                                                                                                                                                  We applied most of ours with rollers or brush.  We used the clear high gloss base over a faux finish on the exterior of a restaurant  (made smooth sandstone match granite on the front of an old bank that was converted into a high end restaurant), That was at least 10 years ago an it has held up good to the weather except right where the sandstone meets the sidewalk, snow shovels and power sidewalk sweeper damage.  I went and checked just before writing this.
This material will start to set faster than other latex paint so you can't roll back into it as long as other paints . I would still thin it. Sherwin Williams makes another product they call All Surface Enamel. We were told that if we needed just a quart of DTM we could buy this as it was just DTM in quarts. DTM only comes in gallons.   I don't know if they have an ultra deep base in this line to use as the clear.  If you want experiment with this product you could buy a quart to try. There would definitely be a learning curve to use this product.  Using the Floetrol you would still need to thin a little.   Check the S&W site and you can get the data sheets on these products.

Jack,
I will check with Sherwin Williams on the clear DTM. The All Surface Enamel is actually the product I've been using on the last few projects and it's great.
Thanks for the info
