AA-5 Aileron Rigging

Gents,



After an aileron contacts its down stop, more rotation of the yoke, against

'spring' pressure, increases opposite up aileron travel.  Is this normal or

indicative of incorrect rigging?



Control yoke/aileron motion left and right is the the same.  Aileron cable

tension is correct and the aircraft flies normally.

Mike, most planes will be like yours.  The important thing is that the ailerons are at the correct up/down limits.  You can file the stops, both the aluminum tube on the bolts and the steel stops themselves.  I use a Dremel.  There are more than a few planes with the holes for the aileron weights off enough to cause a problem.

This was common on the Mississippi built AG5B,s and there is a factory approved fix. I have a copy of it somewhere, but basically involves gluing and blind riveting an insert in your Aileron torque tube and re drilling it.   I think you may be able to get a copy off of either the AYA or Bondline web pages.



This repair should be done by someone who knows what they are doing as you could end up with a real mess, ie replacing the entire Aileron torque tube at considerable expense if you screw it up!

Bill:

The fix is very easy.  It requires an aluminum plug and re-drilling and a bit of special LockTite glue.  That is easy.  Or should I scare you like some others will?

Make sure you are referencing neutral from a factory template made for checking aileron rigging. Wing top trailing edges are known to be up or down from neutral. One Tiger I owned was 7 degrees up at the trailing edge of the wing tip....

Bob Steward told me that he bent many aileron weights to make them ride neutral even with bottom of wingtip. He said that the procedure for redrilling was not always necessary. He also said that the factory had mis drilled several that needed redrilled. I would recommend you take a very short flight to Valdosta and have Loyd Montague at True Flight Aerospace fix it correctly. They are the factory and very reasonable in cost. It's really something you'd want an experienced Grumman mechanic to look at

Years ago, Bob Steward had a great fix for that.



Get the repair manual and look at it.  I would have a plug make for the aileron tube and bond it in place.  Then fill the original holes.  Then use a bushing guide to pre-drill the hole one size small.  Then, reem to fit.
