What are peoples thoughts on painting the galvanized firewall? What paint, surface prep, etc? Let me know. I'm at that point in my build where I need to paint it if its getting painted!

Hello, Doug
You are going to get one opinion per builder...
I had mine powder coated. I probably posted a picture in zenith.aero.

Doug:
You have a real problem there...
A galvanized surface creates an oxidation that prevents rust and paints from getting a foot hold.
You could lightly scuff the surface. Then wash it down immediately with MEK. Followed by an immediate coating of self etching epoxy primer. Then a sealing coat of some other epoxy paint. How long will this paint job last? I don't know.
OR you could lightly scuff the surface. Then wash it down with MEK. Then give it a spray coat of COLD GALVANIZE spray paint. Only available color - Gray. How long will this paint job last? I don't know.
What should have happened would be - Scrap the galvanized steel and replace it with a 300 series stainless steel (302 or 304). And don't paint it. This way you have corrosion protection and a fancy shinny firewall, that will not need painting ever.

How about using an intumescent paint ?

Why Chris?
1 - The firewall is already metal.
2 - You are not going to get any better fire protection than the metal.
3 - The problem is not fire proofing - It is ADHERENCE to the metal.
4 - You would have to do experiments to prove out the temperature range of the paint and the operation conditions.
5 - Since there is an expansion to this paint - Would the expansion cause a loss of bonding?
6 - What happens to the paint AFTER it expands? Does it return 100% back to its original size and bond strength? Which reflects back to Item #3.
Too many variables. The K.I.S.S. M.E. part of this build has already passed. What has to be addressed now is Adherence - Corrosion Protection and Looks.

Doug,
I myself would choose not to paint the firewall
at all. The environment is quite protected from anything corrosive, unless
you firewall mount the battery, which would require special consideration. I
expect the galvanizing will look decent for a long time as is, certainly
much better than curls of peeling paint, which I consider very possible if
not likely.

I didn't paint the firewall, just the aluminum pieces that attach to it. The side facing into the cockpit is covered with an aluminized firewall blanket.

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Hey, Barry---I have long understood the meaning of k.I.S.S. (understood, but generally not followed,) but what does the addition of M.E. stand for?
Chris--- Don't bother to paint the firewall; it's not worth the effort.

Paul:
The way I learned it some 50+ years ago was:
Keep It Simple Stupid - Make it Easy.
I guess the 'it' part never made it into the anachronism... Maybe that was just a part of Keeping it Simple

Leave it bare. It won’t rust, there’s no paint that might burn off and it’s easier to inspect for cracks and such.

I didn’t paint anything on the engine side. I glued an insulating blanket on the cabin side to help keep the heat and noise out.
