Richard,

I've tried to resize my pictures but cannot find "resize" in the pulldown
menu. I see crop, save, format . . .

How do you do that?

You can download an 'app' for Win XP that does what Richard describes, but it doesn't work in Win7. Haven't tried Win8 because it's such a travesty I've avoided it like the plague. If you're running Win7 and use an email program (meaning a dedicated program on your computer like Thunderbird, not web browser-based access), this will work, but it's a bit cumbersome:

From Windows Explorer (not Internet Exploder) or, if on the desktop just point at the image, right click on the image, and from the popup menu, point at 'send to' then click on 'mail recipient'. You'll get another popup that lets you pick image size (mine defaults to 'medium'). The menu will tell you the approximate size of the resized image. It will open a new email with the resized image attached. Anything over 500K (1/2 Megabite) is wasted on a computer screen.
If you're still running XP, here's the link to the resizer app (direct from Microsoft):
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/xp-downloads#2TC=powertoys

Find the 'image resizer' app, download and install. Then Richard's technique will work.
There are 'freeware' programs available that function as Richard describes within Win7 & Win8. Just google 'image resizer', and remember, buyer beware when downloading from unverified sources.

I edit my photos with a free program called Irfanview (PC. Apple products probably come with better tools). If your native viewer does not support resizing, Irfanview is a powerful, yet easy to use alternative.

Personally I use a program that came with my camera, a Canon. It works well for me as I am able to change  or "photoshop" if you would prefer the image to make it a bit better. That way I don't have to worry about f stops or anything else, I can do it in the picture. Then when I save it I can rename it and resize it all at the same time.

However if you don't have one of those programs available. Just open the folder that has the picture that you want. right click on the picture icon and from the menu choose "edit" then choose "resize" and you will see boxes that show the size of the existing picture. It will show 100 for height and width. That is the percentage of the picture. You can choose any percent you want- 25-50 etc. or you can use the "pixels" instead, that would be a number. I generally use either 1000 or 1500.
play with it a bit, it really isn't all that hard. We all like pictures that are big enough to see, but scrolling can be a bit of a distraction. Consider it "helpful advice"  Smile

The Kolb list has been great once again.

I went with the Microsoft XP resizer option. It added resize to the existing menu. It works as advertised and puts a smaller copy of the image into the library alongside the original file. I shrank a 14.6 meg image down to 446 KB and a 12.2 meg file down to 65.4 KB.

On the desktop of my PC is a program called Paint which is used to edit photos. Open the program, mouse over File, then open. When you open the pic it's usually huge, so hit resize, which opens. 100 X 100. Reduce one dimension (the other follows).  I generally aim for it to fit the screen - then save.
