List

I am changing my left magneto to an E-Mag for easier starting. I would like to use the ACS Keyed Ignition switch and put 12 volts to the left side only when the key is on L or both. Don't know if this is possible without putting 12 v. on both sides when on Both. Does anyone have a wiring diagram?

On my ACS switch only one side was hot in the start position. You can use a meter to check yours and wire accordingly.

When did e-mag start making them for jabirun engines?

I have one on my lycoming but did not know they made them to work on a jabiru 2200 engine?

I installed a Rotec ignition a few months ago. I had an ACS ignition switch (no "start" position). I too hoped I could use this with the new ignition but after testing the switch to see how it is wired internally I concluded it would not work. It is set up for the R and L positions to be open when a particular mag is active. The Rotec ignition needs one position with power connected to be closed to be on/hot. I removed the keyed ACS switch and replaced it with 2 regular on-off switches. I already had a separate start button.

Hi, I don’t think this is possible. I have a diagram where an ACS keyswitch was used on an RV with a Lycoming.

When the key is ‘L' it grounds the line from the right mag. The ACS doesn’t use power except for the start ’S’ line but that is only ‘momentary’.
When the switch is on ‘Both’ it’s not actually doing anything. ‘Off' grounds the lines to both mags.

At least that is how I thought to worked and as the diagram I have sent to you suggests. So you need to use the grounding action of the ACS.

This is a bit chewy.

To get it to work so you need to fit a relay that will power the E mag using normally closed contact.
Wire a supply to a normally closed contact and to the relay coil.
Feed the E-mag from the other side of the normally closed contact.
Take the ground of the relay coil to the ‘R’ connection on the magswitch.

When you have the switch to both or L the power will still be there and the E mag will work, when on R it will ground the relay circuit and the coil will energise pull in the relay and the contacts will open to isolate the power to the E mag. When the switch is to off it will ground the right mag and it will ground the relay circuit and the coil will energise pull in the relay and the contacts will open to isolate the power to the E mag and stop the engine…..

OK, that’s how it works in my head, does that sound right Bobby?, or can someone comment?

Maybe I should draw it...
Regards, Clive
