Hello all,

Just wanted to share some pictures of the outstanding work that Dirk Oyen, the builder of OO-145, did by integrating an ipad mini in his panel. A new left panel fiberglass made in which you just slide in the ipad mini.

On top of that, a dedicated converter takes the ipad lightning connector digital audio information and transforms it to analog in order to enter the aux input of the Funke ATR833 radio.

So Skydemon as moving map and the ipad music player as entertainment source. The cable on the pictures is the original one without audio interface.

Have fun, Jacques

Very Nice Job.
How is the GPS Reception into the Ipad?
I found mounting the Ipad similar to yours, that the GPS reception was poor. To get over the poor reception I had to use a bluetooth GPS receiver.

Another problem I had was powering the Ipad. The plug into the 12V power outlet (cigarette lighter socket) Different units produced static interference over the head set. I could not find one that did not cause a problem. I would be interested in knowing how you have got over the problem and what interface you used for powering your Ipad.

Your work looks very neat. Any information you may want to share would be very gratefully received.

Hi Jaques,
Nice panel; interesting to see that the trim switch has been installed so that the operation matches the position indicator - ie.,'up' against 'up' - contrary to the manual. I've turned my switch around as well and it's certainly more instinctive, and hence safer for me, than the original configuration.
Kind Regards
Peter

Richard,
I use my Mini Ipad fitted to right hand inst panel powered by cigarette lighter socket direct from battery thru fuse on engine side of firewall. The lighter socket also serves as a convenient way to charge the battery. No probs with interference.

Gents,
FWIW, I use an iPad2 on a RAM mount attached to the right side of the instrument panel. Power comes from a USB terminal on the back of my GRT Sport to which I have added an extension which comes around to the left side of the display.

Ya, it’s kinda ungainly from the cockpit with a USB line running from one side of the panel to the other, but for now it works. No noise, no interference, no problems at all. Eventually, I may see if I can obtain a longer USB extension and bring it out the right side of the right panel close to the iPad. But that’s for future work on the panels. Right now I need to start an annual condition inspection so I can see if, in 2015, I can fly more than double the 25 hrs I flew in 2014.

Hello Richard, the Funke ATR833 is very sensitive to interferences (EMC) and so we had to go for an expensive TomTom 12V to high power USB adapter.

Is your panel metal or fiberglass that you had GPS issues? This one is fiberglass for not blocking GPS signal.

If you want more infos, you can send me a private message to receive Dirk's e-mail.

Jacques.

Richard,
I have had a lot of interferences from the iPad power cable, especially at the lower radio frequencies, typically 121 MHz and below. My friend and Europa builder Denis Mangeot designed and provided a filtering circuitry which, after many hours of testing and modifying, finally solved the problem. Attached is a picture of the final version of this filter. I do not have a circuit diagram and component list available right now but I could work at it if anyone is interested.

Hi Remi,

After many attempts I have found a charger which was clean enough to not cause interference for my radios, but I still definitely would be very interested in a schematic and parts list if possible.

Many thanks!

David,
My 12v power output is set up exactly as you describe. I too did it this way to provide easy charging of the battery when needed.
I have tried different USB power adapters but all give bad static in the headset. When I was on the quest of finding a good USB power out-put, I was more looking towards a hard wiered output instead of just a plug into a 12v socket version.

Jacques,
Yes you are correct the ATR833 is very sensitive but a quality product, and I have no regrets in fitting it. I would be intrested in which version of the TomTom you used. I Will PM you for your contact details. My panel is fiberglass but I did have problems in receiving the GPS signel.
