My question is this, what is the normal output of the alternator in voltage? My volt meter is reading up to 14.7 volts when running around 3000rpm. Is this normal or should it max out around 13.7?
If this is high, I guess I need a new regulator? My problem is the Garmin system seems to fluctuate as the voltage gets up to 14.5 or more volts. When you pull back the throttle and let the voltage drop, things settle down.

Both mine top out at 14.4 v

My Lightning voltage when up to speed is 14.3 volts most of the time. Some times it is 14.2volts. If you are looking for 13.7 volts, that is way to low. If your battery is charged up before departure, your alternator should stay near 14.2 volts.

most of the time when I take off, the voltage is around 12.5 and shortly after, the voltage will climb to the 14.7 range. it's at that point, the tachometer starts acting erratically.

for whatever it's worth. During my installation of the Garmin G3X panel, the tachometer would not give a steady reading, that's why I started this discussion. What I found out was, the current wave put out by the alternator needed to have a filter installed to "quiet" it down to get a reliable signal. My avionics guy made one from a discussion that I had with Bob Nuckells from another forum here.
