General rule of thumb. Mixture lever next to throttle. Look to see if you still have altitude markings on mixture lever slot, those are in meters. Place lever next to number corresponding to your altitude.
My first answer was from personal experience.

Get a YAK then you don't have to figure your altitude in meters much less feet. 😜

If you want to adjust carb. mixture settings read the Maintenance Manual.
If you don't have one call Doug Sapp.
If you have a "stock" CJ and are asking how to set the flight mixture it is
Rich Aft, Lean Forward. There is a stop on the throttle handle to prevent
the mixture control passing the throttle.
That is where it should be parked above 5000'. I move it part way starting
at 3000'.

Has anyone ever actually put egt probes in an hs6?
Would be interested to see what sort of impact on fuel flow the cj mixture control has. My feeling is not enough to go LOP, it seems to be a strictly ROP set up

Yes, I have GRT EIS on mine. 9 EGT's and 3 CHT's. It is useful to identify which jug is acting up without the "shut down, jump out with laser temp gun in hand" routine. But it is of minimum benefit for leaning. The other day my #4 EGT was higher than normal during run up but even out when applying take off power. I suspected intake leak, so I tighten #4 intake gland nut after the flight. I had 3 more flights so far and high #4 EGT had not repeated.
Would I be able to identify the #4 intake leak problem without all 9 EGT's? Most likely not because there was no other indication of problem (no vibration, no power loss, ...). Is the 9-EGT necessary to safely operate a HS6? Most likely not since so many had been operated safely without.
As for leaning, at 7000 ft or above, some jugs will go LOP and my engine still runs smoothly. But engine will loss power and surge before all jugs go LOP. I fly often with my friend who has only stock instruments, and our cross country fuel burns are about the same. So my 9-EGT is of minimum benefit for fuel saving.

Which of course defeats the purpose of the British style mixture control. With the stop in place a sudden (or any) reduction of power at altitude will not result in the engine quitting since the mixture is enrichened with throttle reduction.
I have found on two different CJ’s that at 7000’ or higher mixture all the way to the stop is too lean – confirming what Robin has found with the EGT probes.

I agree, my last CJ had the stop in place and I preferred it. And yes, I was above 7000ft and at full throttle, so I advanced the mixture lever to the throttle. It got very quiet.

I've routinely flown my YAK-50 with only 30 gallons of fuel or so from NC to Florida, from NC to Pennsylvania and New York, and to all kinds of points "West". Depending on winds of course, I am anywhere from 10,000 to 12,500 feet. I have also ferried a YAK-50 to Ramona California... took 3 days, but hey. Stopping for fuel and enjoying the company of strangers was much more fun that boring holes in the sky for 4 hours at a time. (Yes, I owned a Beech Debonair a long time ago).
If I had "get-there-it is", I'd prefer the Beech or something even faster. If I want to enjoy flying... I stuff myself into the 50. And "stuff myself" is the operative phrase. When I get bored, I just go invented for a while. I personally think these aircraft are truly FUN cross country aircraft. And by the bye, the 50 cruises faster than the Debby. Just no legs.
