Hi
A few weeks ago I asked about what people are using as an EFB in the front office. My IFR refresher instructor was using foreflight etc. The downside of this is that it is quite spendy for Canadian and US data.
On a recent trip out east, I used Fltplan GO on an IPAD 2 (no GPS) and found it to be very useful although a bit slow when swapping screens. I had all the US data I needed even though it wasn't GEOREF'd due to the lack of a GPS receiver. The *free* price was a bonus.
Today I got a new IPAD Air 2 which has a GPS and a much faster processor. I was able to download all the maps / procedures etc for Canada and the US. It also displays wx etc.
I don't have much experience with Foreflight but am wondering what the advantages of Foreflight are when compared to FltPlan GO. It would seem that free maps, procedures etc would be a hard combination to beat.
Any opinions?
Cheers

I have a Bonanza owning acquaintance who swears by Flightplan Go. Some prefer WingX Pro because it supports multiple brand of ADSB receivers/attitude sensors, instead of the one brand approach of Foreflight.

I fall into that later category. I went with WingX because of their support for integration with my Navwork adsb. With that said, I tend not to use my iPad during flight because everything I need in on the efis. The iPad is truly a backup device for me.

Hi
I wish ADSB was an option for me but it is not available in Canada. I am left with XM weather (which I am told is becoming less and less popular in the US) which is quite spendy for wx info.
I have dual AFS 45500 EFIS screens which I really like. Unfortunately they do not have GEOREF'd approach plates, or even just approach plates, for Canada. It doesn't sound like that will change. Although they have support for XM weather it is only for the US data. The Canadian XM weather does not display on their screens. I am hopeful that this will change but it sounds like Canada is a small market for them.
The cost of Jepp data for my 430 WAAS is quite high but I have no choice if I am to stay legal (and safe!) when IFR. That being said, it seems strange that I would pay for IPAD based plates & charts when they are free from many sources. So far I am not aware of anything material that FltPlan GO can't do that I would need.
At present I am working on getting XM weather to display on my IPAD. I would prefer, however, that it display on my EFIS but that is not an option in Canada.
Cheers

Like you I am Canadian and even though a large percentage of my flying is done in the US I need Canadian Plates and maps.
I prefer FltPlan Go over Foreflight for a number of reasons
1. They Offer geo-referenced approach plates for Canada.
2. The can file Intl. (ICAO) cross border flight plans.
3. Multiple ADSB receiver compatibility (Sky Radar DX, which I use)
4. A record is kept of your WX self brief.
5. A complete down-loadable Canadian Flight supplement (CFS)
6. Oh yes, it is completely free of charge.
7. Is available on the Android platform as well as the iPad.
I have used FltPlan Go on an iPad Mini since it came out and seen it develop into the user friendly EFB it is today. I also have it on my Samsung S4 smart phone which is always with me and can easily function as a backup
Even though Foreflight do have some nice features not available at present on FltPlan Go they don't have any of the above features all of which are important, to me anyway.
