I've noticed some have straight/angled antenna on top near vert stab, is this off centered or drilled through top stringer? Not sure how to go about that?
If directly centered and 1/2" hole for bnc does that compromise strength of stringer ( maybe not)? Also how to install a doubler in that area?

Recommend that you not try to center it, but use the stiffener already
present with a doubler or add stiffener to doubler. No one will notice
that you are a 1/4" off center.
On the other hand I have had good performance from belly antennas, even
when on the ground.

Why would you want to do this?
Two bent whip comm antennas on the bottom is much less of an eyesore.

I know from my 6 with two belly antennae I get marginal coverage on the ground but great air coverage; also I'm considering future belly pod.

As Kelly said, they can be offset to miss the stringer and still installed parallel with the airflow for minimal drag.
I built mine that way using a doubler on the inside of the skin and picking up the rivets on the stringer to strengthen the doubler.
I had to put a joggle in the doubler to do it, but there are other ways to pickup those rivets too. Just have to get a bit creative.

At my airport the tower is far enough away that a bottom mounted antenna just would not cut it. I have a top mount and bottom mount.
Here is a photo of the doubler I constructed spanning the two stringers. What is missing in this photo is the tapered wedge that goes between the skin and the doubler. The antenna mounting bolts go through the skin, the tapered wedge, and the doubler.
The skin is not flat at this point and if you attach a doubler directly to the skin it will flatten the curved area of the skin.

Not to argue the point as one can build as they wish. For the others reading this thread and perhaps now worry about bottom mounted antenna performance, my experience is the same as John’s. I’ve never had an issue with the bottom mounted bent whip communication antennas. A specific data point was picking up my IFR clearance on the ground at KSET from St. Louis Approach located well off field.Â

I had problems at KSLC on 118.3. I ended up moving one of my comm antennas to the top.

This is a recurring theme that pops its head up every few months. Most have no issues at all with a pair of bent whips on the bottom, however most is not all. It is usually also pointed in somewhere in the recurring thread that in those rare instances where there's an issue you can just use a cell phone. That said, I have personally experienced the issue and one of the things I'm doing different on this plane (2nd RV-10) is putting one on top and one on bottom. To each their own.

One on top of our fiberglass cabin cover and one under the tunnel. When I have reception issues with one, I switch to the other. I'd do it all the same again.
