Has anyone with experience mounting the red cube between the servo and spider hanging free inline (no bracket, just suspended in the hose line)? This looks like it will take 45 deg fittings on the cube and it will hang at about a 45 deg uphill flow position. Seems like this is simplest way to go...

I'd be worried about engine vibration on an unsupported hose assembly
making the readings inaccurate.
Just thinking out loud.

I initially had mine like you're describing. Accuracy was fine but after a premature failure (400 hrs?) I mounted it to a bracket and it's been good for 1000+. I believe there's a note about orienting the wires upwards, not sure if that means straight up or mainly up.
FWIW, EI replaced my cube no questions asked.

The simplest way to go is to mount it in the tunnel, per plans. Perfectly accurate there (at least with my IO-540 w/ a standard FI system).

I did that with a Floscan sensor. Put a 45 degree fitting in the fuel servo and wrapped the sensor and fuel line with fire sleeve. Works great. It should stay cooler than if mounted to the engine.

Remaining cool is not an issue with fuel flow sending units. The negative to mounting in the tunnel is that you are between fuel pumps, and with the boost pump off, the fuel is being sucked under negative pressure to the mechanical pump. The sending units are designed to operate under positive pressure. Best locations are either between mechanical pump and servo or between servo and spider. The former is required by the STC for type certificated aircraft, the latter most common on experimental. The unit is best suspended on a bracket attached to the engine, so that vibrations are in sync with the engine. If you are concerned about heat, mount it under the intake manifold, and cover it with fireshield.

I have the unit mounted in the tunnel as per Vans. No problems with accuracy
although variations in filling the tanks
can cause variations between calculated and actual amounts. In any case I'm
well satisfied with that location. I have a bottom cover into the tunnel
so I can quickly inspect the tunnel for leaks as well as clean the filter.

Initially, the floscan was in the tunnel & I was experiencing FF flucuations of 0.5 GPH, which made injector tuning "impossible!" After removing the floscan and replacing it with a red cube between the servo & distributor those fluctuations stopped & a good nozzle tune ensued!

I used about 4.5 inches and maybe 24", with the cube mounted to a fab'd bracket under the #1 intake tube.

Lenny, Steve from Aircraft Specialty made all my oil and fuel hoses (great to deal with btw), my servo to red cube hose is 12", the red cube to spider is 21". Of course it kind of depends on the location of the flow transducer. Mine is on a SS bracket just under the case, almost identical to what Ivan Kristensen did.

I recently moved mine to that location to improve fuel flow accuracy and
to try to improve a hot idle issue. AFP recommended the location
(suspended in the fuel line, not attached to engine). EI (the red cube
manufacturer) shows that mounting method (straight fittings, between
servo and spider, not attached directly to engine) on page 20 of the
install manual, buy-ei.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/*II*-*FP*-*5*.*pdf

I like the improved flow accuracy at the new location.

I just marked where on that fuel line I wanted the RedCube and sent the original line to TSFlightLines. Tom put the fittings I needed on the original line. It fits great, and it was pretty cheap too. The only downside is that you're obviously not going to be flying when he has your fuel line!

It is very easy to make your own fuel lines (braided steel) and put on fire sleeve. You can get all the kit you need at a local speed shop.

Thanks for the lengths. Saves me from pulling my fancy plenum to take measurements...
I have the floscan in the tunnel and it's pretty accurate for calculating the fuel used, but it's bouncing around a lot for precise LOP adjustments.
