Attached the picture that I got from you some time ago.
If I remember well, the impeller goes faster on the M14R.

Jan,

Thought you might find it interesting that the Lycoming GSO-480 runs 1219 mmHg at take-off (48"). Continuing the conversation about fuel cooling the engine, this opposed 6 cylinder engine is "only" developing 340 horsepower but at this take-off power setting is burning 52 gallons per hour, versus your 58 GPH with over 100 more horsepower, so in reality you are doing quite well!

I would be remiss if I did not ask how you define efficiency? Typically it is fuel burned to energy produced, and I would agree with you there, but then there is the matter of weight. I believe it is correct to say that the M-14 series produces more power to weight than any other radial built.

This engine is absolutely amazing.

Todd, realistically these model engines are in my mind "proof of concept" versions with a few extras made in the process. Rumor has it that M-14P.com (Jill) might have had some at one time. Worth asking if you want to go this path. Also keep in mind that in order to run one of these engines on a continual basis, you better have contacts to get parts and mechanics that know the engine to begin with. While I might drool over Jan's 50 (and I have), I would not want to maintain it in the United States. That is of course just a personal decision.

But a very reasonable alternative exists, and that is Monty Barrett. That gent has added home grown fuel injection, new ignition system, new higher compression (and quality) pistons and has taken the 360 HP M-14P to a tested 400 HP. Further, he made the same changes to the M-14PF (normally stock 400 HP) and sold one of those engines to Hubie Tolson for his Sukhoi 31. I have personally witnessed the increase in vertical penetration of his aircraft with this engine and it is an awesome change. Dyno runs on the modified PF model have it up around 430 HP, which is very close to Jan's engine but does so without spinning up the supercharger to extremely high speeds, thus it is an engine that should last a lot longer, and burn much less fuel (and oil due to the gapless ring design).

If you are looking for a real improvement to the M-14 original design, done with American parts and ingenuity, this is your answer.

I can very much support the Barrett Pistons, which we have used a lot, although, with European bureaucracy, they are not authorised for use here. But a combination of PF supercharger; electronic ignition; high compression Barrett Pistons and other modifications that we have established produce a reliable 435 hp at 103%.
