Well, it looks like I'm coming back into the fold again - just shook hands virtually on a Century converted (TPE331-1-151K's) 680V. Taking it to Morris for a once over in the coming weeks to see that everything is kosher. Hopefully it won't bankrupt me this turbine business.
If all works out, I look forward to being back in a Commander.

Congratulations, Adam!
If the pre-buy goes well, I think you'll be very happy with your new plane.
Turbines are way more reliable than pistons, and if they're maintained and
kept in good condition, there should be very few surprises. And you gotta
love the 800-hour oil change intervals!
You'll also appreciate that one of the advantages of the 680V is that it's
exempted from SB208A.
I'm curious: with the Century conversion did you also get bleed air
pressurization?

Thanks Stan.
Yes, bleed air pressurisation. In fact, with the Century upgrade it's more like the 681. Still got some Skydrol in there running the gear swing and flaps, but at least it's less.
If all goes well, I look forward to turbine power and reliability!

Hi Adam,
That's great! I've had my 681 for over 11 years now, and although it's
definitely pricier to feed and maintain than a piston Commander, I couldn't
be happier with it.
Feel free to contact me any time and I'll be happy to share my experiences
and offer you free advice that will be worth every penny you pay for it!

Adam, congratulations on getting a Century Turbo. In my opinion they are the best Turboporp on the market for a private individual.
I have been flying 681's and the other models since 1972 and in fact I was the certification flight test pilot for the Garrett Century STC. In fact I still and flying 681's
If you are looking for training, I provide a full flight training school for your the Century Turbo that is insurance approved and is very much like a Flight Safety Course.
I can provide you a list of former students if you wish. If you are interested give me a call at 937-369-3334 or send me an email.
Regards,
Bill Leff

Hi Bill.
I will certainly consider your training course when the time comes. Still in very early pre-buy stages and don't know if all will go through yet, as it's also dependent on the sales of my current aircraft. I will get some training from the guy that now flies it, but after a thorough phase inspection, I will do a full insurance approved transition.
Best,
A.

Good luck with your purchase. What is the N number of the plane you are looking at? Was it also converter to bleed air? If so I assume It was converted to the Hamilton Standard sys.
Best of luck .

It has the bleed air mod. But with Hartzell Q-tips, not Hamilton Standards.
Reg is N171AT.

Plane goes up to Morris for pre-buy on Wed. Wish us luck.
I have ridiculously vain question - on the later 690's and 695's it seems like the prop spinner is slightly more "pointy" than an on the earlier models. Is this just a swap of spinner, or a different prop hub?

Hi Adam,
On the 680T/V/W/681, the spinners are painted fiberglass, whereas I believe they are aluminum on the 690 and up. I don't know if the backing plates and spinners from a 690 will fit over your prop hubs and blade roots. My first guess is that they would, but you'd probably have to do a full engineering study and get the FSDO to approve it on a 337 form. Also, you'd be changing the airflow patterns over the nacelle and into the inlet, and the rotating mass of the prop/spinner combination. Whether that would make any real-world difference is anyone's guess.
Good luck on the pre-buy! As long as all of the maintenance is up-to-date and the SBs and ADs are complied with, I think it will turn out to be a smooth inspection with few, if any, surprises.
Regards,
Stan

If this plane has Hartzell props it has aluminum spinners but they are not the pointy ones. The pointy ones come on the new wide cord Hartzell props on the 690/695 series.

Hi Nick.
Nice to meet you briefly the other day. I'll give you a call one day and maybe come have a look at the 690.

Belated update.
Phase inspection completed. Lots of smaller stuff, but no real show stoppers. The cabin leaks the previous owner had mysteriously lived with for almost a decade was as mentioned not a single culprit, but multiple. All windows except one leaked, basically. “It would be easier to tell you where it didn’t leak, then where it did”, as my Morris said… But the wing root attachments (a normal culprit) did not. The worst offender was the door. Not the seal itself, but the door frame had been reinstalled at some point and it had been installed wrong (logbook does not give a reason why) and was all on cattywampus. The door didn’t fit properly, was shimmed wrong and had all sorts of problems preventing a tight seal. Unbelievable that they flew it like this for so long without being able to pressurize properly. Doorframe was re-jigged, as well as door, painted etc and now the door fits perfectly. Locking pins align great now. Even the old rubber seal is now working good it seems, so need to change that as initially thought. The untight windows and doors has also allowed small amounts of water into the cabin and we will have to change all insulation and get rid off the old nasty stuff.
Engines and accessories have a clean bill of health, except there’s no logbook entry of having the nozzles sent off for overhaul in over 800hrs. Maybe they did, maybe they didn’t. Supposed to be a 200hr interval to check flow rates and spray patterns. Not a terribly costly thing to do, but something the seller will have to pay for. One starter generator needs overhauling and one hydraulic pump has a leaking seal.
Overall, could be a lot worse.
The windows are pretty scratchy and unclear, though. I thought about replacing the front ones, but had a minor coronary when I heard about the price. We're going to try to polish them now. There are a couple of aircraft window repair companies that come to you and do an optical restoration/polish.
Still a month away or more before I can start flying it. I still got the Aerostar to whisk me around until someone snaps it up. It's slow selling piston twins as you know… But I’m very excited about the day when I’m all signed off and can take her home for the first time.

Out of curiosity - WHY doesn't SB 208A apply to the 680V, when it applies to the -W, 681 and 680FL and FLP model? What's so different about the 680V?
