GSC inflight adjustable prop bearing failure

Hi Group,



I have a GSC inflight adjustable prop and had the bearing fail. Those

of you who have had that happen know what I’m talking about. I

continued flying it with the prop pitch fixed. How much trouble is it

to replace the bearing? Can someone share the experience?

The only real bearing fix is to use a true thrust bearing. I will try to find the photos I made of the modified push rod and bearing cup. It is actually very easy to do. I have hundreds of hours on the same bearing. Use a INA DL12 bearing.

I have the newer version of the prop with the dual bearings. They

lasted for a bit more than 600h. The pushrod got bent and damaged from

spinning around, so it is no longer possible to see exactly what the

design looked like. I would like to go with a proper thrust bearing,

if I can make it fit this version.

Any photos would be great, send them directly to me at

paqs345(at)gmail.com if the attachments to the group don't work.

The push rods are actually easy to make using the old one as a guide. Buy some aluminum rod stock from Home Depot, cut to length, slot one end, and then turn down one end to fit inside the bearing race. Actually if you use the DL12 thrust bearing I added a brass bushing behind the turned down section to provide a little additional contact with the rear bearing race.

I have now removed my prop, the bearings are all but gone and the tip

of the rod was sheared off. With the dual bearing design, it is going

to be more difficult to make an adapter for a different bearing and a

new rod.

Try the agents for a shaft and 2 sets of bearings ,be safe and replace 300 to 400 hrs
