I recently started the engine on my CJ6 intending to fly but noticed that the oil pressure had dropped to zero. The engine was shut down and the aircraft secured. 6 days later my mx guy (Jason Berman) and I (Jason mostly) explored the problem. We determine that the oil pump was putting out pressure but the oil was not getting out of the reservoir. Oil was returning but not getting out.
Long story short we found after drawing all the oil out that a plastic oil cap from a quart oil container had somehow gotten into the reservoir and made its way to the oil outlet and blocked it. It had probably been there for along time and just happened to make its way to block the oil outlet. We had to remove the oil reservoir in order to extract the oil cap. I would guess that most people when they change the oil do not inspect the inside of the reservoir. It would probably be a good idea to start doing such an inspection.

This is not the first time I've heard of this. Search the archives, I'm sure you'll find several examples.

I so distrust myself that I remove the cap from a quart of oil and drop it on the ground before even nearing the airplane. Murphy and I are well acquainted.

Another idea. Take the cap off of you oil bottle and leave the cap on the wing root while you are pouring the oil in the tank.

We had a customer with oil pressure problems in a Yak 18T, and after some
investigation found no less than 17 oil caps or their retaining rings in the
oil tank!

That's incredible!
Keeping a pair of long, mechanical fingers in your tool box for that "just in case" situation helps in removing the caps and rings instead of the possibility of having to remove the oil tank.
