The top of my cowling gets pretty warm during flight and I would like to apply some heat reflective material to the inside of the cowling to reduce the heat absorbed by the cowling. Aircraft Spruce has a variety of material to choose from. However, I not sure which material would be sufficient. I want to install the minimal amount of material to do the job. I don't know if you can over do this but I suppose there is a trade off with everything.

I use this stuff all over the place. Bear in mind, though, that its purpose is to reflect radiant heat, and not to insulate against convective heat. Thus it works really well to protect from hot exhaust system components that are radiating at 600-1500F. I doubt it would do much to insulate against the hot air inside the cowl.

You might want to take a look at the baffling under the cowl. Streamlining the airflow into the cowl will help you reduce the temperature. I had a similar problem awhile back and restructuring the cowl baffle reduced the temperature significantly.
