Someone mentioned flying all winter using skis. They mentioned it took a lot of power to get moving with the skis. Having put the Firefly on it's nose using too much power while stuck in a rut before I was just wondering how this works out for people? Do many fly in winter?

I try to fly in the winter,, but keep it on the wheels. 

when I drove snowmobiles,Â  the metal skis would stick,, put on plastic skins and Eliminated the sticking.Â Â  

  local flyer built skis from snow boards.Â Â  they were built with the wheels through the skis.Â Â Â  he could land on hard surface or the snow.

I had a mate in the very early days of ultralighting who swore that, when  he snow was deep, he had flown across the valley to visit his girl by tying  the  bumbers (?fenders) of his car to the undercarriage to make ski`s.  Pat

I made a set of skis out of aluminum for my Maxair Hummer back in the day,  and they would stick to the snow, but I could break them loose from the snow by  rocking side by side.  Plastic snow boards ought to be better though. The wheels stuck through the skis, which made things a lot easier on the ground. When I first made them there were no holes for the wheels, and even though it was 30 something years ago, and I was a lot stronger than I am now,  it was all I could do to move the airplane around. You got to have wheels.  Taking off and landing on snow is a hoot, and flying over snow covered landscape is very pretty.

Having grown up in Michigan flying Cubs with skis we always carried two small pieces of 2X4's.  Aluminum Skis create friction going across the snow and get warm.  The minute we stopped we always lifted one strut at a time and put the chunk of wood under the ski before it could freeze to the ground.  As soon as the ski cooled you could set it back down without fear of freezing.  If you didn't do this you had a problem.

Winter flying is better because the air is denser it seems to be a smoother ride, and the engine feels stronger. Sometimes I have to put on long pants if it drops down into the 60's.Respectfully,
