Hi folks,
I had the pleasure to fly a Yak 52 this weekend here in San Diego and loved it!
Most fun ever flying planes as a pilot and after flying Cessnas, Pipers and Bonanzas nothing comes close to the thrills. Only downside to the Yak 52 is range and lack of IFR capability. I am working toward my instrument rating and wanted to find out if an experimental plane like the Yak 52 and CJ6 are classified can be fitted with lower cost IFR avionics and used for instrument training and the checkride?
Also I need to find out what the price ranges are for a Yak 52 or CJ6 since they are all across the board on TAP, Controller, etc. How much should I expect to pay for a nice Yak 52 or CJ6?
I wanted at first an American warbird like an AT-6, T-34 or T-28 but prices are 3x more expensive than a Yak or CJ!!
How do I get checked out in one? I looked at the Redstar Pilot group and contacted a few San Diego instructors but no luck. Never heard back from Redstar either after contacting them by email.

Rich Hess and Pappy speak up. Help the boy get checked out. $60-70 K for YAK. $100 - 120 K for CJ 6. As far as fuel on the 52, everybody worries about it but soon find they are not going to be doing long sorties in the YAK. The CJ is the XC aircraft. The 52 can be fitted with bladders that gives her roughly 3 hours of fuel.
The cockpit of both are no set up for long legged people. Hence after 1.5 hours in either of them you want to get out and stretch your legs, drain your bladder, and hydrate. You get a workout flying either aircraft.

Thanks viper,
I would ideally like to partner with an instructor who has either a Yak or CJ and pay time to get the check out before purchase. That way I can fly the plane home once I locate the right one. I am looking at a few in California right at the moment and Yak are half the price of a CJ. So might get a Yak and with the extra cash buy a second plane like an RV7 for longer trips. I could add fuel bladders and Dynon glass panel to one. How would one take an IFR checkered with local DPE in such a plane? I know a few DPE in San Diego like Julie Keane are pretty nice folks. Anyways feel free to PM if you have contacts or want to help me reach my goals and I will reciprocate to the next Yak/CJ newbie.

Yak for sale in Ft. Collins, CO. Excellent condition. The guy will check you out. Barnstormers.
Low $50’s.
These are not X-country airplanes. Just go fly locally and have fun.

We just went through the YAK - 52 search and buy process.
Advice: spend a little extra to get a cleaner airplane. $45-50K sounds good until you see the cost of recovering the rudder, air system upgrades, parachutes, five point harness, FOD barrier, and Auto plug mods.
iPad and a Stratus for X/C flying.

Excellent advice! Putting it another way, you really do get what you
pay for when buying a Yak 52.
There was a Fram oil filter commercial a few years ago which definitely
applies when first buying a Yak 52. It went something like this:"You
can pay me now or pay me later."
Let me know if I can help.
Merry Christmas

Reminds me of myself 15+ years ago when I was just getting into this. Put another way, a friend of mine has a saying that could not be more true...
"The bitterness of a poorly maintained airplane lingers much longer than the sweetness of the price." 'nuff said.
In general, they are both great airplanes. The Yak is a terrific, purpose built, aerobatic trainer. It even has it's own category in the World Aerobatic Championships. If you are interested in competition style aerobatics (negative G, snaps, etc.) and don't plan to do much cross country flying beyond 300nm, then the Yak is a great option. If you are looking for something with good aerobatic capability but can still get cross country at a reasonable speed (140KTAS) with 2 people plus bags for a week, a bit more room in the cockpit, and a bit more stable, then the CJ is a great choice. What you really need is a CJ for formation and cross country, and a Yak-50 for local fun. I still miss #001, but I digress. Bottom line is it is prudent to write down what your current flight profiles will normally be and then go fly them both.
One word of caution for both airplanes, and any warbird, is to get proper spin training before learning any aerobatics, particularly in the -52. The -52, while completely predictable and reliable in a spin, has some unique characteristics that will surprise the uninitiated/inexperienced pilot.
In any event, you will not find better bang for the buck warbirds than the CJs and Yaks. Welcome to the adventure, it only gets better from here. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.
Doc, you need to buy some of my rudder pedal extensions, they make great stocking stuffers.
Fly safe!
Barry

Hi Skyjockey,
I agree with all of the previous responses you have received, both aircraft are fantastic just a bit different capabilities.
In 2011 I chose the CJ-6A and have been extremely happy I did. Great aircraft, incredible construction and fun to fly.
However; an illness in my family forces me to sell our beloved Nanchang.
N92862 is a 1965 CJ-6A, 285hp Huosai HS6A, AFTT 4493, Eng 799.
KX-155 NAV/COM, KI-204 VOR/LOC/GS, Garmin 296. Lots more.
$70,000.

And your saying the CJ-6 not a real war bird? See the video below. About :11 mark.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0yNcM4kV6g
There were 10 CJ-6Bs off the Nanchang production line, rigged to carry rockets and bombs. N Korea still uses CJ-6 with that set up. Maybe not a real viable weapon in today's combat environment, but in non contested airspace and against just AK-47s.
