What do the Russian's currently use as a basic trainer? The Yak-52 still? Or have they done away with prop training for military pilots?

All primary training in Russia is done on the L-39.
However the Air Force has ordered, and indeed they are in production, a batch of 52M (long-range fuel/bubble canopy/400-hp/3-blade prop/pilot extraction systems), but none yet delivered.

Please keep me informed about the 52M. My 18T currently with Bela or annual. Hoping to fly en masse to Tannheim from Gyor/Byon on the 14th.
Nice to finally meet you at Shobdon. How is the round the world trip going in the turbine 18?
Happy Landings

I should add that the 52Ms are old (but low-time) airframes being reconditioned and converted.

I have always been interested in the Russian extraction seats. For light aircraft they seem more practical than a full aircraft let down system. However fitting them into a CJ without major canopy modes (and I love the sliding canopy) makes them hard as a retrofit. ( At least I can't figure how to do it). But for the formation flying and formation acrobatics guys this would be a great safety asset.
Installation + cost would drive the price of these things. A lot of guys might try some really exciting flying IF the was a way to get out of a screw up.

If the cost was at all reasonable, or if a eastern european provider could be found, installing the new Yak M wing on our older 52's would have great interest to me., Better cruise speed, more fuel etc

IMHO (which really isn't worth a whole lot) regardless if a CJ or Yak 52 had ejection seats, I seriously doubt the owners would say "oh well" and eject. Bailing out using our existing emergency parachutes runs a very close second to ejecting during screw ups. I can't recall anyone saying "oh well" and bailing out. All those that had the opportunity to bail and had chutes of course, chose not to egress and ultimately became statistics.
Maybe a another solution would be to install the Cirrus aircraft emergency parachute system. Probably would cost less than two ejection seats.

The 'new' wings with integral long-range tanks are of course simply modifications of existing wings.
The modification is a very substantial one, and although we have had a few kits made with Yakovlev in Moscow to convert aeroplanes we are restoring in Russia, I suspect that the work involved - i.e. rebuilding part of the wing is probably too expensive to make sense in the West.
We actually sent three kits out to Australia, together with a technician to show them, and their feeling was that he wasn't economic in the sense of what they could actually charge for the conversion.
For the bubble canopies, no reason why they couldn't be obtained in the future.
However the problem is that Yakovlev has to run commercially; the whole 52M programme has been costed at huge prices for the military, and I suspect that even civilian 'run-ons' would be expensive!

Robert,
You would be better of cost wise doing a TD conversion and gutting the cockpits of all the heavy avionics. If you just have to have a family model. However, as long as you have the Clark Y airfoil, you are looking at a slower airplane. You can only do so much and you still have to deal with the wing. It is still a great airplane no matter how you look at it. Still faster than the average spam can!
If you want a faster, more agile, and just plan cool YAK, get a 50. Without all that extra wt., it does cruise faster at the same power settings as the "Duece". Keep your Duece for those times you just need the family model to introduce someone to the Great World of YAKOVATING!
Do not want to hear from you Chinese Yakkers about the agile and faster virtues of your CJ's. They are all great airplanes and fun to fly! For some of us Mil types, they make a pretty good and cheap replacement for the really fun iron that we used to fly. Saying that, I know there are a few of us that are still lucky enough to be flying Mil iron and fly our YAK/CJ's too!
