The Matco front wheel axle replacement is easier to set the bearing load
but it's diameter is too small (like the original Vans axle) which
allows the inner bearing race to turn on the axle (not good). Have a
machinist make you an axle big enough so the race fits snuggley.

Add 10 pounds of lead on top of the empenage between the horizontal
stabilizers for weight and balance. it will keep the 10 in balance with
only one pilot and a full load of fuel(read the "add ballast if
necessary for balancing" in the weight and balance instructions from Vans).

I strongly suggest an alternative: for flying solo, or two up front, keep 20 lbs of water in a plastic jug in the baggage area. When the day comes that you want to carry a lot of weight (and the cg near the aft limit) just pour the water out.
BTW, cg will be at its worst with zero, not full, fuel.

I have flown a lot of different -10's and have never felt the need for ballast. I have flown a couple that had weight in the baggage compartment already. I don't think it needs any, and I certainly would not add permanent ballast to the tail.

My -10 is pretty light (1608 lbs) and I'm short (seat one notch shy of full forward). I do carry water ballast in the baggage area when solo. Flying at the forward cg limit the only things I notice are (1) I cannot get the nose up as high as I would like on a full flaps landing, and (2) it's hard to stall.

You all forgot about one other stat; the plane is both slower (top speed) and not as efficient in forward cg. Just as a ck, set auto at normal cruise altitude and speed, then have your front seat passenger get in the back, watch the mpg calc. I fly almost entirely by mpg, so I can tell you it definitely makes a difference. Keep the calc from middle to slightly aft and the plane will perform much better.

Well, I'd say the plane is slightly faster if you move the cg aft. But my right seat passenger is usually my wife, and I know better than asking her to move to the back!
The interesting question is, "Is it a gain or a loss if you add EXTRA weight to move the cg aft?"

I only meant to move the passenger to the back as a test, not to have anyone stay there.... sorry about that. I can absolutely assure that even adding weight to attain a better flying cg will still make the plane more efficient.
A lot of us fly on trips with just two on board, and this gives us plenty of opportunity to place the baggage where it's most suitable for the best cg.
One other trick is to not always assume that putting the flaps in reflex is the most efficient. You may notice up to .3 mpg difference (plus and minus) depending on conditions/settings. But when descending, always have it in reflex. I think since I fly mostly by mpg, I'm seldom flying at wot. I know there's guys out there with way more experience and knowledge that me, so feel free to correct me, but what I have found is that there's a sweet spot for the 10, efficiency wise. IAS at least 150 mph +-5. When you fly slower than that, mpg goes down, faster, and it also goes down.
A few things on my plane that might make a difference is I have cold air induction, a little higher compression, dual electronic ignition, and a 3 blade MT prop. That being said, assuming normal conditions, wind etc, in cruise my throttle setting is about 1/3 to 1/2 (19" when wot might be 21" (around 10,000'), and I run between 2,100 and 2,200 rpm.
It's just fun to play around with all the settings when flying.

A couple of pics to share. First is a shot take Christmas eve by a friend while I was flying his family members.... he just happened to catch the 10 in the right spot.
This was taken on the way back to Texas from California, with a 2 day stay in Sedona, just after Thanksgiving. Shows 1/2 throttle, 20" at 7,700', rpm 2,100, in reflex, not much wind. RPM on left, could never get AFS screen to received rpm from electronic ignition. Using backup alternator as an exercise, that's why the amps don't show
