Does a cooling shroud for the air compressor exist for the M14P? Perhaps something similar is available from the CJ operators? I'm a new operator of a Yak 55 in Arizona, and I'm wondering if improved cooling would be a good idea for our high summer temperatures.Thank you!

It does exist, John. Built of carbon fiber by a skilled fellow at our airport. It was modeled after the M-14P shroud on a Yak 18T.
I know that Ian Burnham, the builder, was close to creating a mold from which he could product more. He can be reached at aerobuild(at)msn.com and (707) 975-0199.

An alternative to cooling is to stop it getting hot in the first place. Install an unloader. Kimball sell a kit. It is a valve that is switchable from the cockpit that vents the out going compressed air line to atmosphere. THe compressor will not heat up while it is nothing to compress. Venting to atmosphere probably save a bit of power too. I start the engine with compressor on and by the end of run up the pressure in the receiver is up to operating pressure, then flick the switch to vent to atmosphere for the flight.

Royden-The airplane already has one of these installed. So, I don't have an air pressure indicator. How does one install one?

Sorry, but I want to put “sloop” in front of your name.
Yeah, you have to have a pressure indicator in the cockpit, otherwise you don’t know when to unload the compressor. One was installed when I acquired my Yak.
I’ll check this weekend to see where the tap off is. I’m sure your Yak has a ground air-charge fitting just behind the trailing edge of the left wing root. I think the tap off is within the fuselage on that line but will verify for you. I have had to replace the 1,000 psi gauge required several times. So if you are going to fit one, get a few spares and if you have a system air leak check there first.

Hello Dennis.
Yes, the Yak 55 has a pressure relief valve that cycles all the time when no unloader is fitted.
The cylinder bore and piston diameter is slightly smaller than the valve on the Yak 52, I believe.
