I love this bickering about airplanes!!! For those guys who learn to fly in the T-34 - - - well you know the old saying "No matter how ugly, your first lover is always the one you thought the most beautiful". Its' cockpit is to big. You tend to rattle around in it. To this day I love the Champ. ALL VERSION of it. And I love the B-24 and think the B-17 over rated. And I love the Storch! Shit I just don't enough time for all the airplanes I love. I don't love a 51. I don't love the B25, - - - to hard to pull the props though. I loved the 777 and 747SP. I didn't love the 767-100 (piece of crap), but her big sister 767-300 was the one airplane I could grease on no matter what! I love the 747-400- - - -had great bunks! I always wanted to fly a Connie, and a DC6. I got to familiar with a DC-3, but a Loadmaster would be interesting.

Well here is to a great New Year fellow listers. May your airplane dreams come true.

Since I scuba dive Florida is great place for that if you can handle the humidity and bugs and dodge the many tstorms. For aircraft purchase, I still need to experience a CJ and T34. Another option is a Yak 52TW or Yak52 with extended fuel tanks for longer range.

Ultimately it comes down to your mission. For short hops to do acro, the Yak 52 is the best. For longer trips with some acro, either the T-34 or CJ6 do the job well. The Yak 52TW is great as well but prices are higher than CJ6.

I will need to fly a CJ6 and T-34 to make final decision.

If you can't spend $200k+ then the T-34 isn't in the running.

Happy New Year All,

Just to throw another spanner in the works, I am buying a Yak 52, fresh from overhaul with long range tanks. The extra tanks take the standard 120L to 270L which should give me legs of about 1000km.

Best of both worlds!

Just back from a long business trip to Switzerland and recovering from the cold bug that I caught on the flight back home. All good things. I think that either a CJ or a Yak 52 with long range tanks and updated avionics would be the right ticket for me. Another option that could work out well for me is to buy into an existing partnership in a Yak or CJ and then buy a second plane for long cross country trips like a Bonanza or Mooney. Then I'd have the best of both worlds.

I checked T-34 and AT-6 prices and they are twice as much as CJ and Yak for one in decent condition. There are some T-34 for under 200K but most need a lot of work.

Sorry "Looigi" but my CJ has about 80 gallons of fuel for about six hours duration and about 750 miles or about 1200 km (no reserve)... doing it in style and comfort!

Which plane I like best as price is similar for a nice CJ6 versus a nice T34.

Right now I don't need advanced acro plane and for that an Extra or Pitts works better. I love the Yak but its range and cargo space is not that good for more than an hour flight. Perhaps someone who has owned both a CJ6 and a T34 might have some insights. Cost is similar. I see nice CJ6 for 120-150K and nice T34 in same price range. Fuel burn is similar and MX except for wing spar AD then would image similar as well.

Not to mention that $120k - $150k would buy a KILLER! Super CJ with every conceivable mod and upgrade including LR tanks, but $150k would only buy a poor to mediocre T34.

Since you asked for some specific T-34 info I will give you some as well as impressions between all of them as I have flown all of them.
My T-34 has 84 gallons burning 15 gph (at) 163 KTAS which gives a no reserve range of 912 nm / 1685 km in actual style and comfort with a huge baggage area with an external door.
The only thing that may be better at XC would be an SF260. A little faster but not sure about range and baggage area.
The wing spar issue is long ago resolved and wasn't an actual fleet problem but a specific problem for commercial ACM operations that were flying the planes very hard with lots of hours and g cycles. Even the F-15/16/18 wear out! Anything made will fail with enough g's and cycles. Regardless all the flying T-34's have had their wings inspected and modified in some way and their lives have been extended far beyond our own.

T-34 acro ability is almost identical to the CJ. Based on comparison between local 50, 52, CJ, and 34 MX cost works out to be similar with similar usage. The T-34 is mostly gas and go but will cost more when it does need something while the CJ / 52 require a lot more MX per flight hour as oil and air leaks are the most often being chased. Parts will cost a bit more for the 34 but the Russian / Chinese parts are increasing in cost every year.
Best advice I can give is:
1) buy the right plane for your mission (the way you will use it)
2) buy something that you can support locally (parts, mechanic, etc)
3) lean towards something that the people you fly with will be flying although any of these planes can fly form with the others.
4) buy the best example you can find/afford (lowest hours/best restoration). You can pay now or you can pay later but you will always pay in aviation.
The T-34, CJ-6 , Yak 50/52, T-6, SF-260 and T-28 are all great airplanes and I would own one of each if I could.

You forgot the "Chick Factor".  While they may be dawned to the AF/Navy tag the 34 has, they being a curious specie are drawn to the " mysteries in the Far East" and exotic nature of the place. So in that park is CJ reigns supreme.Smile

I stand corrected then. It seems Wikipedia doesn't know everything!

However, after 6 hours flying I would imagine that comfort would be a relative thing eh? My ideal cross country airplane is one in which I can walk to the toilet!
