My wife and myself are planning to do a Florida tour early April with a rental car, taking the opportunity to spend 2 or 3 days at Sun 'n Fun and meet many of you in person. For this I could do with any and all advise around two topics: accommodation and best days to attend.

For planning our tour, I could use some advise on accommodations for the nights. Any information and all suggestions for hotels/motels/lodging are appreciated, is booking in advance advised/required and if so, how far in advance would be booking be required? (we don't have excessive demands on luxury, we only need a bed for the night and breakfast in the morning, options for having dinner in the neighborhood would be nice too).

I would also like advise on what days are best to visit, my wife is not into aviation too much, so I'll have to make sure that she's not getting bored while I'm having a ball Wink Perhaps be there on Wednesday (for the night air show - assuming this will be on the Wednesday as last year?) and Thursday? Because the program is not yet published on the Sun 'n Fun website, I'm struggling determining what days are best. All suggestions are highly appreciated!

I'm not opening a topic for attendees with this topic, I'll leave that open for the American europaphiles

Greetings,
Marcel

Marcel,

The Wednesday night air show is very good. Often there is a dinner with Europa owners and builders at Hooters Restaurant on Thursday evening.

The SNF website has some hotel information on it and there are lots of hotels in the area. I stayed in a hotel in Orlando 15 years ago and the drive to SNF was easy. Look at the driving directions on the SNF website to see what would be an easy route to parking. I think parking is on the south side of the field, so a hotel to the south may be easier drive to.

Hope to meet you this year.

Jim & Heather

South of KLAL is just farmland for miles.

There are a few hotels on County Line Road northwest of the airport,
and there are dozens in and around the town of Lakeland proper which
5-10 mi northeast. Orlando has hundreds of hotels and extensive
nightlife and other activity, but it is at least 30-45 minutes east northeast.

Thanks Jim, Heather and Ira for your advise.

I will plan to be on the show Wednesday and Thursday to continue our tour around FL on Friday then. That means that I will be looking for accommodation somewhere around or in Lakeland for 3 nights.

Recommendations for hotels still welcome...

Our plans have materialized, we won't be needing further advise on the two subjects mentioned before.

Flight tickets and rental car for our tour have been booked, as well as accommodation in Lakeland. We will be checking in on Tuesday at the Travelodge right off the I-4, check-out on the Friday.

That gives us the entire Wednesday and Thursday to be at Sun 'n Fun.

Hope to meet many of you there.

Regarding Sun 'n Fun 2016
To avoid confusion, some new comers may be confused about the Europa
display.
Custom Flight Creations , my company, is the sponsor, so all the banners,
and directories will say Custom Flight Creations on your program, but to be
sure, you will see our Europas displayed on site N-55.
We are right on the flight line, which is just North of "C" hanger. We will
have a tent and I'm still not sure which plane or planes we will display.

Anita and I, and of course Steve Pitt, Jim Butcher and our Euorpa Club
family, are looking forward to seeing you all in April.

Be sure to get your fly-in/tent camping or RV camping reservations in, as we
are expecting a great show this year. It seems folks are tired of winter.
The Sun 'n Fun staff has a very informative web site. They changed it quite
a bit this year and it has volumes of information.
Consider being a week long fly-in volunteer. My EAA chapter makes
sandwiches for the volunteers from about 0900-1200, then the rest of the day
is yours. Afternoon shifts are available also.
Other volunteer positions are available so check the SnF website. If you
volunteer for the prescribed hours, your passes are paid for, and obviously,
lunch is free. Full access to all events is really convenient for the
volunteers.

For the non camping visitors, off site accommodations are many.
Next week the Hotel and Accommodations Guide should be out. (Typically out
the first week in February.)
A rental car is a must if you stay in the hotels outside of Lakeland FL.
Bus service to the Sun 'n Fun campus from surrounding airports is not as
good as I would like, but some are available from down town and selected
hotels.
Of course, expect to pay more when staying near the SnF campus.
There are no busses from the Tampa, Orlando or other International Airports.
A rental car is necessary.

If the weather looks iffy, or your plane is not ready to make the trip,
drive down and make it a vacation.

Spend a day, spend a week. Its time to get your motor running again.

Bud Yerly

Hello Bud,

Just to let you (and Steve Pitt) know that I will be there from the UK for the whole week. I hope to spend some good time on your stand.

Looking forward to it.

I don't know if anyone still cares, but for those with sticker shock
relative to hotel accommodations in Lakeland, I can tell you that
equivalent or better hotels are still available in Brandon (10 mi West,
near Bud's shop) for $50 - 100. per night less. I just book a Marriott
Fairfield for 137/night. Better restaurants in the Brandon too.
