I have owned my -55M for 5 months now and had great difficulty starting her until Sergei Boriak took me aside and gave me the following tip:
Pull 15 blades through with the clean oil valve open.
Prime to the right side just 3 strokes.
Pull 5 blades through and close the valve.
Prime the right side 3 times, turn on the switches and prime the left side one stroke.
With the throttle just barely cracked open engage the start button.
At the first sound of combustion , switch the mag to 1.
The engine will purr to life with no smoke, noise or fanfare.
Switch the mag to both and turn the shower of sparks off.
Simple as that. On warm days, 55 and warmer I have in excess of 60 successful starts on the first try.
On a day when the outside temp is 55' or less I find I need to prime 4-5 strokes just before engaging the start button then cycle the throttle vigorously once it catches to keep it running.
Works every time.

He is the “Yak whisperer”
I think he can see into the engine for the right amount of air (throttle) and fuel (prime)
I have seen him hand prop a yak !! Herb

Hand propping a YAK with a 2 bladed paddle prop isn't difficult. I highly recommend not attempting to prop a three bladed MT unless you are highly experienced and get a very good game plan to get the hell out of the way of the extra blade with significantly less flywheel effect inertia from the lighter blades. Shit happens REALLY fast when the engine fires with the MT type three bladed props. On second thought, I highly recommend not hand propping a 3 bladed MT at all.

I do not recommend either.
This was 3 bladed MT on a TW.
On the other hand I used to hand prop my Wilga with 2 bladed prop all the time.

Dan,
When it's colder outside, try puttiing in 4-5 shots of prime (cylinder side) then try opening the throttle a bit more before you hit the start button. Instead of vigorously moving the throttle, try injecting another shot of prime into the cylinders to keep it running when it's colder.

It goes right in behind the #9 cylinder. If you leave the primer unlocked or up, it will flood that (#9) and it will not fire. Same with the M-14.

That’s correct Ernie.
The Huosai, M14 and (as far as I know) all other variants of the Ivchenko engines inject primer fuel into the blower case.
The P&W R985 and R1340 go directly to the 5 upper cylinders.

M462RF is rated for 315 hp at 2450 rpm. My HS6A is 285 hp at 2350 rpm. Both engines have the same compression ratio of 6.2 and reduction ratio of 0.787. The supercharger gear ratios are very close at 8.82 and 8.77 respectively. I am sure there are other differences between the 2 engine, but I wonder if I run my HS6A up to 2450 rpm, shouldn't I get close to 315 hp? By the way, my HS6A book says its max. permissible rpm is 2450 (in a dive with MP no more than 500 mm Hg). What do you think?

With the throttle just barely cracked open engage the start button. At the first sound of combustion , switch the mag to 1. The engine will purr to life with no smoke, noise or fanfare. Switch the mag to both and turn the shower of sparks off. Simple as that. On warm days, 55 and warmer I have in excess of 60 successful starts on the first try. On a day when the outside temp is 55' or less I find I need to prime 4-5 strokes just before engaging the start button then cycle the throttle vigorously once it catches to keep it running.
