I have been giving some thought to adding a second brake handle and cable to the front cockpit of my Yak 52. I have known of a few cable failures over the years and would like to have a back up. Has anyone on the list engineered a solution? No sence reinventing the wheel if it has already been done.

Don't re-engineer a good system. You will be creating a new headache for your self. Keep the cable lubricated. Replace the cable if you feel it needs to be.

I kind of go with Doc.  Just keep an eye on the cable and  its feel.  I've owned my CJ-6 over 21 years.  I replaced the  factory 1969 cable a couple of years, after I bought it.  I replaced the  handle at the same time, with one made by Bill Blackwell out in AZ.  Both  have been in the airplane some 18 years or so with just minor adjustment now and  then.  And I fly my airplane a lot +/- 100 hrs/yr.

  

 The cable is the lest likely to fail.  More likely the  rubber in the de booster (QS-1) or diverter (QS-2) will start  leaking.  Then you will find the brake pads will ware.  That is where  most of your problem will come from.

Doc's point is spot on!   The cable failures you have heard or read about were very likely due to improper adjustments and inadequate maintenance over the years of operation.

Parking brake:Some years back I did this mod to the CJ6, it was simple to make with off the shelf parts, worked excellent, and was not all that expensive but I did not feel that there was enough interest in the mod to go forward with the project.Â  Most folks felt that it was not a common (enough) problem and most of the time they had a GIB anyway.

It was simply a toggle like red lever on the panel, which was normally in the up position, to apply the emergency brake one had only to bat the lever to the down position.Â  Once applied both brakes were applied equally IF the rudder bar was parallel to the firewall.Â  To release simply place the lever to the up position.

About cable problems:

Cables seldom brake without warning.Â  The warning is often so subtle that you will miss it if your not paying attention.Â  The warning often comes in the form of your cable getting longer.Â  Brake cables DO NOT stretch, your cable is breaking--do not simply tighten up the cable to get rid of the "stretch". Â  Years ago we started having our cables built here in the states using US aircraft cable and a MS stainless steel ball swaged to the cable end in lieu of the gob of lead solder as is used by the Chinese. Â
