Hey Guys,

I just bought a Yak 55 M that has a MT 3 prop on it. Thinking about a MT9 or Whirlwind. Thoughts?

Jay

Whatever the other qualities of the two manufacturers might be, a critically
important issue as far as I am concerned is that MT propellers are fully
certificated. This means that they have to go through a rigorous testing
schedule, involving a very significant overspeed for quite a long time. I
say this with some feeling, having had propeller failure (with another
manufacturer of variable-pitch propellers) in which a counterweight came off
and removed half of one blade. I would not wish this on anyone, and very
fortunately I was overhead an airfield practising aerobatics and was able to
land quickly. But various instruments were broken, and the vibration quite
incredible.

Hi Jay,

I have been flying the Whirlwind 3 Bladed Prop since 1999 and upgraded to
their latest model (all composite) in 2014. I fly a lot of formation and
Acro as much as the CJ can take.
They may have had some issues in the past but none for years and I had Zero
issues and actually, I Love this prop - not only it looks great, it performs
amazingly well. There are quite a few flying in the U.S, you might want to
take a hop with a Whirlwind and you'll see what I am talking about.

If you'd like more details, call me off list.

Not sure if you saw my youtube Product Evaluation video I made a couple
years ago about this prop but if not, here is the link to it:

If you are based in the U.S, I recommend, hands down, that you seriously
consider the Whirlwind... They are based in Ohio and have a great customer
service.
