Gentlemen,
For those of you who’ve sprayed a 2 part epoxy primer and topcoat, I’m curious as to how much material you’ve used.
I’m using the Poly Fiber EP-420 and Aero-Thane topcoat…one gal. of the primer is supposedly good for 1000 sq. ft., and the topcoat only 225 sq. ft.
After painting everything but the fuselage and the two wings, I’ve used less than a quart of primer and about a quart of topcoat.
I have an experienced pro handling the spray gun and he’s taken me seriously about NOT laying on heavy coats…nonetheless, or perhaps as a consequence, some of the parts sprayed thus far have less than the desired ultra smooth glossy finish.
Since we’ve shot the flying surfaces in sequence, one factor resulting in less than optimal results may be that too much time elapsed between the recommended three coats (fog/mist coat, followed by 2 medium coats)…another may be simply not laying on enough paint...but I speculate.
My intention for now is…for those parts w/ less than satisfactory smooth gloss…is to sand w/ 400 grit and reapply topcoat.
I’m also wondering if anyone can recommend a protocol for some kind of rubbing or polishing after cure for this kind of product.
Striving for excellence, not perfection,
Fred

Hello Fred,
While a can't speak to Aero-Thane topcoat specifically, I do have experience with two-part polyurethane. I would recommend for those areas with less than desirable gloss you might try wet sanding up to 1,200 grit and then buffing the finish to a high gloss. I use 3M Perfect-It Rubbing Compound followed by 3M Perfect-It Polish. The rubbing compound is applied with a 7" variable speed Makita angle polisher Model 9237CX3 with a lambs wool bonnet. Polishing is with same Makita polisher but with a foam pad which yields a swirl free finish. Going purely from memory, I believe I use a speed of around 1,200 rpm. Be careful and check skin temperature frequently. You don't want to burn the finish. Contact me offline if you have any questions.
Good luck,
