I have the original GRT Horizon HS Dual EFIS display with a Dynon backup and have been very happy with them for the past 10 years. However, both screens now show a small area of blank pixels which are not significant yet but I can’t help but think this is a sign that life is getting short for them. My initial thought was to upgrade to a new GRT HX system (still pondering which size) but was wondering what the current thoughts were on other options that might be better. By better I mean as good or better capability for less money. Since the trade-in values have wained of late, I’m thinking about hanging on to the current system and use one screen as a full backup on the passenger side.

Thanks in advance,
Marcus

Well, of course everyone will now suggest you buy what they bought! So, up front, I have an HX - HS system, and think it's the best value for the money. And, I think GRT is the most capable regardless of price, within reason.
Caveats: I think the new, simplified Dynon system may be a better value for VFR only aircraft.
With an HX you will gain: synthetic vision (good for night vfr operations - NOT to fly low, but as a warning system if you screw up, or emergency landings, etc.); More, and all high speed, serial ports (but unless you're adding new equipment that doesn't matter); more (e.g., USB) options for adding ADSB-in boxes; not sure if the HS can control a remote Trig transponder. Probably other stuff I've forgotten.
Two HXs vs one HX, one HS. As I said I've got the latter. With two HX's the main thing you get is the ethernet interconnect, so an ADSB-in into one HX can share the wx with the other. And, even more serial ports, more of them high speed.

Thanks Bob,
I realized I likely opened another theme as varied on opinions as the primer wars, but it does seem good for me to stick with GRT. By the way, I mistyped my current system, I have dual WS (even older) screens. I like the bigger 8.4” but given I would prefer to keep 2 screens going just in case and for readability I’ll probably go with the 6.5”. I’m not going to change out all my radios so the center stack gets in the way of dual 8.4s it seems. I did just get the Navworx ADS-B (exp version) so it would be nice to do all the changes at once. As a side note, I could not have been less impressed with the Navworx customer service, I’m hoping the product will be MUCH better.

As Bob said, GRT is the best because I have them.... Smile

Dual HX with an SX. I also have Navworx and think it is great. Not much to learn if you stay with the same.

Note WS to HX. They are different sizes and bolt pattern.

Why I like it.

Redundant with all the features I need and use. Went with the SX as a backup as an eventual replacement for my Blue Mountain.

Not all that cheap and I did mine one at a time. At one time I had an HX, HS, and WS. They all played together very nicely....even though the HX was showing up the other two, they still talked....

I had two HXs and sold them off after 35 hours.
Why? Well, the HXr came out and the autopilot interface is really great! I bought the 12.1" and a MiniX because I wanted a back up but there was no room for anything larger than the MiniX. Can't say enough about how great they are. The resolution is much better than the Dynons and the AFS up to the latest models.

Could some kind person (maybe Stein?) list the terrain resolutions of the various EFISs - not screen size, or pixels.
