Hi All,

Is there anyone out there who has tried to connect a Blue Mountain EFIS G3 Lite to a Trutrak Pictorial Pilot?
I have the Serial Port B connected to the Pictorial Pilot but the autopilot doesn't recognize the GPS input.
I suspect that I don't have the correct settings in the EFIS (choices include GPSS and NMEA 0183 among others).  BMA Tech Support says they haven't tested this autopilot so that can't give me the correct settings.

Anybody out there have any ideas?

Thanks
Jim Ellis

The NMEA 0183 should work.  Just make sure that the autopilot and EFIS are both at the same baud rate.  The standard baud rate for the NMEA 0183 is 4800, but some systems will output at 9600 as well.  Either is fine with the autopilot.

Hi Andrew,

First of all let me say how surprised and delighted that you folks at TruTrak monitor the List and would take the time to respond. It is much appreciated!

I spoke with John in your Tech Support Group today and he said much the same thing...that it "should" work. But he had never talked to anyone that had actually been able to make a working serial connection to a Blue Mountain EFIS. I don't know why but that seems so odd to me.

There must be someone out there that has actually tried, successfully or otherwise, to connect a Blue Mountain EFIS to a TruTrak autopilot.

Thanks again for your response,

Jim Ellis

For those of you who may be following this thread (maybe three people in the Western Hemisphere) let me update what I have learned.

In a phone conversation today with Larry, BMA Technican, he confirmed that the Serial Port B sends out no data when it is selected/activated. He tried several different units with the same result. He thinks it might be a software problem.

This confirms my own observation. When I connected my laptop PC to the G3 Lite serial output cable there was no data stream coming from the G3, therefore there was nothing for the TruTrak autopilot to lock on to.

Because all the BMA folks are off to Oshkosh they said they will work on a fix when they return.

I feel good that we may be making some progress.

Blue Mountain Avionics has discovered that the Serial B port on the G3 Lite is inoperative. Regardless of the settings placed in the Setup window there is no output from the unit on this pinout. There is no GPSS or NMEA-0183 information sent even if one selects "none" on the Serial A port.

This means that, in spite of the fact that the Install Manual clearly states that you can drive a Trutrak autopilot with the G3 using the settings provided, the G3 Lite efis is incapable at this time of providing the needed information.

BMA has told me that that have looked at the BIOS software and cannot find the cause of the problem and they are now looking at the hardware as the source of the malfunction.
