And here, we see the downside to using shortened URL links.
|
With a subject line that just says 'doc files' (?), did this come from
Bob, or from a hacker who is phishing using Bob's hacked account? With
the shortened link, you can't tell where it's taking you. With a full
URL link, it's usually pretty obvious whether you want to click on the
link.
Since most email clients and browsers can handle multi-line URL links
these days, have shortened links outlived their usefulness?

Bingo. I won't click on a link that doesn't have the full URL, and
isn't a well known destination. Far too easy to fall victim to the 13
year old next door...

But that is the point, it is trivially easy to fake an email to appear
as if it is coming from someone else.
Like this one for example, that is faked as if coming from you.
You can't definitively know who is on the other end of the keyboard
unless we used cryptographic signatures or other unique identification
means.

It has been like that ever since email was invented. There are
additional security measures that can help to prevent this, but none of
them are perfect and most email services don't seem to use them.
Email was not designed to be a secure medium. It is up to us to just be
careful. Don't open links that you aren't sure of (tinyurl is a trivial
way to disguise a malicious website, as one example).
