Listers and Lurkers:
I have always wondered if there was actually a published max wear measurement for the Yak/CJ brake drum. So today I decided to practice what I preach and sat down with a stack of manuals and started reading. It's amazing what can be found with a bit of due diligence. I found the info in the PT-6 Trainer Aircraft Overhaul Manual (Airframe Accessories).
Oddly enough section 12-1 "Brake Disk" only yielded the minimum thickness of the brake pad, which is 8mm.
Section 11-1 "Landing gear Wheel" explains the max number of and depth of groves in the brake drum and mentions that the drum can be turned to a MAXIMUM ID of 196mm. It goes on to say that if the drum is blank it should be turned out to 195mm (new dia). If you do the math this works out to just shy of .040 worth of wear. I am sure these numbers will be applicable to the Yak 18T,50,52 and the CJ6 and many others.
Some of you may recall a shipment of brake drums which were found to be to small in the ID to fit over the pads. These must have been the blank drums as described in section 11-1.
All good info.
Best,
Doug
