I am thinking about doing a major upgrade to my CJ. It's one of the 2001 airframes and has about 350 hours on the airframe and stock 285 engine. I also have a 1960's era CJ (owned by a friend of mine) with a 900 hour engine that needs some love.

I'm thinking about upgrading mine to an M14 and modernizing the panels. I'd move my engine over to the other CJ and then have a 900 engine for either spares or to send to overhaul.

Having said that, who is doing conversions these days, what do they run (engine + installation)?

Also, what's on the wishlist for avionics, etc? I'm thinking an EDM-900 + either Garmin or Avidyne glass up front. While budget is important, what goodies would you install if you were starting with a clean slate?

What about M14 prop options (price and performance).

I'd recommend the following

Front Cockpit

2 10" Skyview displays or 2 10" inch and 1 7" displays

Dynon AutoPilot panel,

Dynon button panel,

Dynon Radio panel,

and Dynon intercom
Rear Cockpit

Dynon 10" display or 10"inch display and 7" display
Other system components:

Dynon Transponder

2 Dynon ADHARS

2 Dynon Engine Monitor units

2 Dynon Auto Pilot Servos

1 ADSB unit

1 Dynon GPS unit

This gives you EFIS with backup ADHARS, 2 axis auto pilot, 3+ screens
with 1 hour backup on the system should you lose electrical power and
after your aircraft battery is dead. It gives you full ADSB for
weather, etc. and full 2020 Next-Gen integration. It comes with
synthetic vision, Maps, etc. I flew the system in my CJ for over 3+
years and it was fantastic. You couldn't beat the cost/value of the
system with anyone else.

Remember all the money you spend you will never get back. With all the recommended upgrades the aircraft won't fly any better (M14P) being the minor exception for more demanding acro but at an increase in fuel costs. Putting all this money in the rear cockpit??? Who is this for? There is a reason the Chinese and Russian keep it simple. Are you going to do a lot of IFR cross country flying?? If so, like Ernie says..... Buy a Bonanza. These airplanes are used primarily for VFR Acro and formation FUN. When are you going to have time to look at a Dynon? Sometimes less is more! A couple of good radios, GPS, Weather and traffic and just fly it like you stoled it!

Greg:

With you 110% on this subject and I would also add rudder and aileron trim mods. and AP to the waste of time and money category.
Correctly set up the CJ is the most nicely balanced aircraft I have flown and great for moderate aerobatics and general fun flying.

But then it’s a free country! If someone wants to turn it into a Bonanza clone well have at it, its their money.

Agree you'll never get the money back out of the plane.

The M14P(F) upgrade is about 40k.  GREAT climb performance, not much level speed upgrade.   It IS a different airplane with the M14P.  I recommend the upgrade if you can afford.   As for more fuel cost, not really if you are flying formation with others.  On long trips you have the choice of fast or less fuel.

Avionics...  I never regretted the avionics upgrade.    It was nice being able to climb up/descend through cloud decks to get to an airshow/home.  I DID fly IFR with it, and it was a stable platform with the autopilot.  If you can't afford two airplanes, and you do use the CJ for trips, it comes in handy.    As for cost for the back cockpit, the reason I went with Dynon is once you have the system, the screen is just a screen so in the back pit it is less than 3k for a 10" screen.
There are other good things about the system:
Traffic (it allows real SA of other planes out there)
Weather (METARs etc)
Full engine monitoring (all 9 EGT/CHT, Oil in/out, etc.)

Oh, and if you remove all the heavy chinese wiring, instruments, etc. you'll lose a significant amount of weight from the plane.
The haters going to hate...do what you want with your airplane...

Go daBear. I have a Dynon with a 430W. The auto pilot pays for itself!!! The ability to fly IFR to go through wx is outstanding. And yes I know about a budget.
PS
The PF is great.

I'd recommend the following

Front Cockpit

2 10" Skyview displays or 2 10" inch and 1 7" displays

Dynon AutoPilot panel,

Dynon button panel,

Dynon Radio panel,

and Dynon intercom

Rear Cockpit

Dynon 10" display or 10"inch display and 7" display

Other system components:

Dynon Transponder

2 Dynon ADHARS

2 Dynon Engine Monitor units

2 Dynon Auto Pilot Servos

1 ADSB unit

1 Dynon GPS unit

This gives you EFIS with backup ADHARS, 2 axis auto pilot, 3+ screens with 1 hour backup on the system should you lose electrical power and after your aircraft battery is dead. It gives you full ADSB for weather, etc. and full 2020 Next-Gen integration. It comes with synthetic vision, Maps, etc. I flew the system in my CJ for over 3+ years and it was fantastic. You couldn't beat the cost/value of the system with anyone else.

Bear,

Thanks. Very helpful.

Walt, Ernie, et. al., I'm not concerned about getting my money out of it. These are airplanes, after all. I appreciate your opinions.

I am interested in bang for the buck, aerobatics, formation, and making the airplane a little better at going places. Having done a lot of all of it (and having owned a Yak-55 for a few years of the ten or so I've owned the CJ), adding another 80 horsepower is appealing. And getting all of those heavy, Chinese instruments and wiring out of the airplane is also appealing. I'm trying to make the airplane better fit my missions and perform better.

"Buy a Bonanza"....you don't know how funny that comment really is, and I'm just going to keep the why to myself.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Joe

Hi Joe;

And I, yours! In fact I fully agree with your stated objectives but
perhaps have some more concern about the cost of getting there.
And to be honest there may be a generational gap here. At 83 I am likely
the oldest CJ pilot on the list and the idea of a TV screen in the
instrument panel
just blows what's left of my mind.

Cheers;
Walt
