So if you have been following the MT prop gov saga, you are most likely aware that we established that the Hartzell gov for the 540 comes in two flavors:

S-1-26 for narrow decks
S-1-32 for wide decks

We also had established, or I thought we had, that Van's carried both but under the un-intuitive nomenclature in the catalog of O-540 and IO-540 (I say un-intuitive because the fuel delivery system has no bearing on the correct type of gov for a given engine). Any way, thus informed, I ordered the O-540 version under the impression I would get the S-1-26 narrow deck model.

Nope. The box had O-540 written on the outside but also a printed sticker that said S-1-32. My heart sank. I opened the box all the way up to verify ad sure enough it's an S-1-32 wide deck model. So I get to call Van's tomorrow and see what I need to do to return it. I guess I'll also see if they have any S-1-26s still sitting on the shelf. ARGGGHHHHHH. Sad

Maybe consider a pcu5000x instead mine has worked well on my narrow deck for years.

Thanks but it's not a brand/model issue, it's a I picked the wrong place to order the part from issue and now I've got more work to do. I'm just venting because I'm already frustrated with this whole thing and this wrong gov isn't helping.

Clearly whomever makes the decision on what accessories to purchase has no understanding that there is a difference between what governors are needed for wide vs narrow deck, or they would have stocked and recommended the P-860-5 governor from the beginning, and the wide deck Hartzell, making the narrow deck models the exception.

When I was making this decision, I spoke with the service guys at the largest prop shops in the country, and asked them, which governors do they "never" see for maintenance. They have a good perspective of how this stuff holds up years or hundreds or hours later. The feedback I got was they never see PCU governors, rock solid.

+1

I installed PCU-5000X governors on an RV-8A and RV-10.  Flawless.

OK so I heard back from Vans and they don't have any Hartzell S-1-26s in stock so I'm back to square one. Since now I have to find a vendor I might as well explore the PCU-5000X since you guys so highly recommend it. So where did you guys get yours? I see that Spruce carries them but they don't always have the best price on things.

I found a post on VAF where you could buy it with a coupon code
for us and get it for something like $1200.

Just to stir the pot a bit more. Smile It looks like the MT governor was developed from the Jihostroj / PCU a while back. Looking at some pictures of the Hartzell internals the flyweights are one machined piece. The MT is welded. The welds failed. It might be worth a look how the PCU is made. If it's true that some kind of weird vibration is causing the problem a similarly constructed governor may also fail the same way.

Todd,

I am trying really hard not to laugh, but considering all that has happened, it just seemed fitting and ironic.

Someday we all need to hook up at an airshow and have a good laugh.

BTW, when I was installing my A/C compressor, it didn't fit. It was only slightly off, but still didn't fit. Bill and I spent weeks trying to figure out the problem. I read him the model number right off of the box dropped sent from the warehouse in Texas. He confirmed it was right. We were down to considering trimming some cylinder fins to make it work. Turns out that the factory put an identically looking unit that was slightly larger in the wrong box.
