After 22 years of buying "Real"aircraft batteries, the ***Tards are wearing me down with their price increases. I'm thinking about the two 12V in series. The gell cell type. Anyone been this route?

Craig,

I've been using the Oddesey AGM Batteries. Half the weight, half the cost.
I used a pair of the PC545 I believe.

Yes. Odyssey batteries are an excellent replacement. We use a pair of PC925s in most Soviet battery boxes. A couple of things:

1. You can get a nice cable made at most welding supply places to put the two batteries in series.

2. The batteries can be damaged above 14.7v volts. This means that the maximum for a pair is NOT 29.4v but more like 29v since the internal resistance in the two batteries will never be equal. They will last forever if you adjust your voltage regulator to that.

3. Batterymart.com has the best prices and free shipping that we have found. Sealed batteries are shipped charged via UPS ground.

4. There are a lot of different choices of sizes if you are working them into a box. You don't really need much smash in a CJ/Yak because you're not running an electric starter. Even the PC680 will do you fine. The PC925 is enough to run the starter/generator on an L-29 or Mi-2, so its serious overkill for your plane (although it would run the avionics all day if your generator died).

Yep. Buy mine from Battery Source for about $132 for the pair. Chunk them after two-three years.

Craig;

I have settled on the Panasonic LCX1228P, 12V Valve regulated lead acid. 28 Amp/Hrs. Whole lot of overkill but will out last typical Gill or Concord at least 3 lo 1.
Fits nicely in the CJ battery box – see pics.
In customers CJ (NO battery minder and at least twice inadvertently discharged –switch on) Still strong at sale of A/C after 9 years.

On my CJ. going on 6 years, with a battery minder (type recommended by Mark Bitterlich) I have not seen a no-load voltage less than 26.5. With almost constant de-sulphiding and trickle charge I would not be surprised if they lasted 20 years.
