Hi Guys
My Gas struts are becoming a little feeble and probably need regassing.
When I had a CT2K I did this myself by placing them inside my compressor storage tank. It was a bit hit and miss but worked quite well.
As I have a bit more time I would like to repeat the exercise but would appreciate from a member the exact pressure the XS struts should be
Thanks in anticipation and Blue Skies and Light Winds for 2017

Try sales(at)igsltd.co.uk they are quick and efficient- and know the right pressure. 165N (yes, that is not a pressure) appears correct for the Europa.
They charged £32.00 all in, 50% of which is postage.
Also try Karen at Europa if you wish to go OE route.

Hi John
thank you for your reply
I have tried Karen for the last 10 days now on the phone and left messages but with no response until as a last resort phoned David at Swift Aircraft, that got things sorted.
I will use SGS as prompted by your goodself
Appreciated your message

Hi John Again
I posted the struts to IGS as suggested but a palaver at the Post Office as they wouldnt accept gas struts in the post.
I could perhaps understand this if it went by air but its only 25 miles to Mitcham from Guildford and there is no longer an airfield in Croydon!!!
They thought the Nitrogen was Laughing Gas and wouldnt accept that the atmosphere is mainly Nitrogen. I dont like deceiving but I took it to another Post Office and when asked the same question Said it was a SPRING --no problem.
Just so that others know how to post them

Hi Bill,
I called IGS and sent them the details of my struts. They came back and said they could not re-gas them because they were custom struts made for Europa. They said I had to contact them. Have you had yours returned yet? Are they OK? Do you have a contact at IGS I could speak to?
Many thanks
Carl

Why not buy new ones from sgs-engineering.com . You have to buy a pair at about 15 gbp each. Very good service from company and fit perfectly.RegardsÂ

That sounds like to easiest solution, Graham. Do you know the product code for the correct struts? If I ask for the ones with the same code as my current ones I think they'll just direct me back to Europa again.
Thanks

Looks like the part number is GS86991. When you put it in their search box it comes up with this;

I think this illustrates our dilemma. We all want to support Europa
Aircraft because we rely on them for parts that cannot be obtained from
other sources. When it comes to parts that are readily available from other
sources the factory are simply not price competitive.
Gas strut from Europa £47.76 excluding taxes and postage.
Gas strut from SGS (sold as a Europa Aircraft Door Strut) £18.99 exc taxes
and postage. Delivered ex stock, ordered online.
So what do we do?

Hi Brian, I absolutely agree about the company - it is essential for us that they exist and I do my very best to support them where I can; they are always my first port of call to look. For me, ease of availability (especially for our specialist parts) is the first priority and cost (within reason!!) is secondary.
Nb - by "ease of availability", of course it's very much the consideration that for many of our specialist parts the company is the ONLY source!
On the occasions that I order from Europa I often think ahead and include smaller things that I will need in the future, even things like Puralator fuel filter elements that are undoubtably available on Fleebay for half the cost but that I can't be bothered to look for. However there is a limit of course, when you read for example the hassle that the gentleman above has had over gas struts - he first explored the company route with no success and found an alternative available with a one click-next day delivery then that's a no-brainier.
I must say though that in my experience I have always found the company (and Karen being the first point of contact) to be very available and helpful. We must remember they are a small cottage industry in a competitive market place performing a vital role in supporting a very small number of demanding people.....!!

I would just like to add my 2 pence worth to this thread. I do agree that it is better for us owners if Europa stay in business however, Europa as a company from MY experiences is all about 1 person........and that's Karen. She is you point of contact when ordering, she picks your order and then ships it, BUT when she isn't there whether she's on holiday or whatever then that's it! Phone doesn't get answered which means In essence there is no Europa. It's like Swift cant be bothered to pull on resources and put someone else in the chair to keep things moving. When this does happen what are owners supposed to do? Stay grounded? Stall on your build? Not acceptable
If you do a search on the forum reference these gas struts, I started a thread looking at other sources for items and gas struts were one of the things lots of us wanted. One of the guys on here organised to go to SGS and do a group buy...........HOWEVER Karen then read the thread and contacted them to remind them that they should not sell to us as individuals. My thoughts on this were how dare she!! I should be able to spend my money with whoever and whenever I like.

If we could fly in to Wombleton to get spares life would be so much easier. When John and Roger were running Europa, they used to meet us at the airfield clutching our spares!!! Now that was service with a smile😄

I would like to thank those that have supported the company/myself and for your kind words. It is not often that I comment on subjects, but on this occasion I feel I need to advise of the situation regarding the Gas Struts. The gas struts supplied by Europa Aircraft (2004) Ltd are custom made (not off-the-shelf) and are approved for use by the LAA. To some these may appear expensive, but we try to keep our prices as low as possible for you Europa owners and our supplier did advise that these should be marketed at double the price that we are currently selling them for.
On another note, we are happy for you to fly into Wombleton and collect your orders but please phone ahead!

I would suggest that in all probability, the low volume, minimal quantity purchasing price which Europa Aircraft pays the manufacturer or the distributor of such parts is a near equivalent of that which the customer at an online outlet pays…and because of much higher volume, the online outlet has negotiated a lower price from the supplier which allows the seller to make his profit…to have those parts in stock and staff to handle orders are real costs which Europa Aircraft must bear and attempts to recoup with these seemingly unreasonable markups, but who am I to say…surely no one is suggesting that EA is attempting to overcharge its customer base…?...
Perhaps the more fundemental question might be…What does a few dozen extra pounds or bucks mean to someone who’s lavished thousands on an expensive hobby, when not spending it via support for a company deemed essential to maintaining the value of that expensive hobby, will ultimately result in Swift shutting down its Europa lifeline?

On the subject of gas struts.
Please pay attention to the lift capacity of off the shelf struts. Some are overly charged for heavy items and soon folks have found the studs have broken out of the fiberglass. So reinforcing had to be done.
Of course too light and the door won't stay up.
If your doors are really heavy. A higher strut pressure is necessary, but don't forget to reinforce the studs.
I have had a strut company build a set of struts and locking sockets for me that are acceptable for those with heavy doors from thicker glass as on the XS with those neat clear plexiglass doors , door handles, pins to hold the door in, custom really nice but heavy door knobs, and lots and lots of filler. They work, but the price isn't terribly different than the Europa Struts. Nice guarantee.
Regards,
Bud Yerly
